I feel you should have a little bit of both.
You should do something yourself for example a photo album with your pictures together and all the things you've done and also something like jewelry doesn't have to be TOO EXPENSIVE as long as its nice and tasteful

a jewelry.... i want to receive a jewelry from my special someone but unfortunately i didn't receive any jewelry from my present and my past... i don't know i just find it very sweet if a guy will give me jewelry . i feel like very feminine and i have a real value on him..
and i think that if a guy gives a jewelry he truly loves the girl no matter how much the jewelry is... just my opinion
