Cereal problems.....?

My daughter is 5 1/2 months old and refuses to eat cereal with a spoon. I've tried feeding it to her twice a week for the last couple weeks and all she does is spit it back out. I gave her some baby bananas the other night and she didn't have a problem with them. Cereal is important for babies so I need to know how to get her to eat it. I tried mixing the bananas with it and that didn't work. Help????

Cereal is not necessary, or even 'important.' There is nothing in cereal that she isn't already getting from breastmilk or commercial formula.

Many babies dont' like cereal because it tastes like the box it comes in. So just stop. You can offer her fruits and veggies if she likes them (though she's a bit young for those too -- 6 months is the recommended time to start solids for most babies), but no need to force the cereal. You could try again in a month or two .. or just forget about it. She DOESN"T need it.

Actually, cereal isn't that important for babies at all. Many people nowadays consider it just empty calories and prefer to skip it all together. It is true that your body (and your baby's) will absorb nutrients much better from natural sources like fruit and veggie than from the fortifications in your cereal. While babies do need iron starting around 6-7 months, most formulas are fortified with iron, and there are lots of veggies that contain iron, if you are nursing. If you think about it, you wouldn't make rice a major part of your diet, would you? So you probably don't really need to worry. If you really want her to do cereal, try another variety, like oatmeal (assuming you tried rice first, which maybe you did not). And if you mix it into fruits, put just a very little in. But honestly, I wouldn't worry about it; it doesn't have anything your baby needs and can't get elsewhere.

She doesn't NEED cereal at all, I'm not sure why you think it's "important" to them. It's basically just a filler. She obviously doesn't like the taste of it and that is just fine.

Continue with the bananas if she likes them and then move on to other fruits and veggies.

Cereal actually isn't important for babies. There's no real nutrition, the only people who really think it's important for babies are the people making it. Skip it, get some stage one baby foods and forget the cereal.

First off, cereal isn't as important as you make it sound. But, if you would like your child to eat cereal, then get some spoons with stuff that she likes. But, maybe it's just that she doesn't like cereal!

The only reason cereal is considered important is because it's high in iron. If you're still breastfeeding at the six month mark, your iron stores are low and baby needs iron from solid foods. Just offer her other iron rich foods.
