I'm trying out for a musical. Help?

Okay, my school's theatre program is putting on Once Upon a Mattress this year. I want to try out for Queen. I have the acting down, but I don't think I am a very good singer. The Queen only sings once or twice, but still. Is there any way I can improve my singing w/out getting lessons?

Update:

Thanks, guys! Especially Becca :-). I have confidence with Acting (I played the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland last year) it's just...I've never sang in front of people except family. I work to boost my confidence :-)

I just directed Once Upon a Mattress last year for a high school. First, the best thing to do when you are auditioning, is to be CONFIDENT! Choose an audition song that you feel comfortable with and really know. The queen's songs are not really difficult and are done best with attitude! (Listen to Sensitivity on Youtube) Really, most people who think they do not have great voices really do have nice voices but they are not confident. If you go out there and sing with good projection and confidence you will do better than you think you could. I always cast people who blow me away with confidence in their reading and song.

Practice, practice, practice! Sing every day, but make sure you have the right techniques. Sing from your diaphragm, not your throat, otherwise you'll damage your vocal chords. Buy "Singing for Dummies" or "The Idiot's Guide to Singing" (I'm not saying you're an idiot or anything haha); those books are always helpful. If you could go to a vocal workshop or maybe just one special voice lesson before the audition, you could really benifit because the coach can give you all of their tips right then. Good luck! I love that musical =)

    1) Study the characters for Once Upon a Mattress on StageAgent: http://stageagent.com/Shows/View/734

    2) Look at some online videos about singing: http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_3196_learn-sing-bett...

    Break a leg! =)
