What do you do when you cant sleep?

Other than coming on here. I put it in this category because I best relate to this group, and usually I don't get all the stupid answers one can find elsewhere.

Update:

The last thing I need is the munchies. I work out to have curves and look good.

Update 2:

I was making up a funny story in my head then Mickey Mouse went all crazy and started gunning down other characters and I woke up- it was horrible all the violence, stuffing everywhere...

I read a book for my continuing education requirements and did 3 crossword puzzles and yet here I am.

Sleeping pills do not work on me- I contraindicate Benadryl and am on way too many meds to add OTC meds to the list.

I drink fluid all day. I am always thirsty, I asked several doctors including my endo to test for diabetes as my father had it and I always fall at a point just in range for normal by a margin of like 1 or 2.

Hormones still give me hot flashes so I'm hot then I'm cold, I'm yes then I'm no...ok Ipod is still working :)

I am always searching for more information on the internet especially with being retrained to become a nurse or teacher (I have to retake some classes like comp and physics 1st)-

Thanks for the answers so far- Ive tried all of these and yet here I am

Lie awake at night and try to think of questions that I haven't yet asked and see if I know the answers to them, and if I don't, I make a point to google those questions later. Often the things I think of are questioning my own philosophies and beliefs, and thinking of psychology, and how my own brain would be processing information at that moment.

I've made quite a nasty habit of sitting for up to 9 hours on my laptop just reading answers to my questions, and answers to subquestions that arose when reading the answer to the first question, and reading interesting looking links from the page that I was originally reading, and asking more questions that occurred to me while reading.

Luckily, it's summer vacay, so I don't have to worry about getting up early for school the next day :-P

Stress exacerbates my insomnia, so I try and relax by listening to some music or by taking a nice, long, warm bath. Get into something nice and comfy, grab any books I've been meaning to read, journal, drink tea, watch a movie in bed, cuddle with my partner, go for a run, do some work related things, etc.

I'll take a benadryl if I really can't seem to fall asleep, but don't like doing it too often.

Don't take sleeping pills. Who ever suggested that is quite silly.

You can get addicted and eventually depend on them. I read until I fall asleep. Find a good book and get comfortable. Make sure you've gone to the toilet already so you don't have to get up. Try not to drink much water before you go to bed, and try to have your last meal 2 hours before you go to sleep. Turn the lights off so there are no bright lights distracting you. If worse comes to worst just go lay in bed until your in a comfy position and close your eyes. Think calming thoughts and eventually you will fall asleep.

When I can't sleep, I close my eyes and make up a funny story in my head. It seems super childish, but I don't care. Sometimes I even dream about the stories! I usually sleep with my ipod playing, or the radio on. That helps me sleep, too.

Depression causes my insomnia... usually i just stay awake until i finally feel so tired that i can't help but sleep, on desperate nights, i suffocate myself with a paper bag so that i pass out, some times i am out 15 min, sometimes the whole night

You might actually want to try an energy drink about an hour before you go to bed.

    It'll make you crash hard.
