Have you heard of African-Americans ever converting to the Amish church?

To be a part of the Amish community, you have to learn to speak High German and Pennsylvania Dutch.

Update:

Well, you have to learn them languages, but it helps.

Update 2:

Yeah, their word for outsider is, English. Everybody who is not Amish is an English or an Auslenner.

Like some of the people said before me, it is not common but not impossible. I have met many black Amish people.

Most times, the people that I have met were adopted but there are the few families who feel dedicated enough to convert.

It is a rigorous process for everyone, not just blacks. But, to answer your question, yes, there is a small percentage of black people who convert to Amish.

I personally have never heard of it, but does not mean it cannot happen. There are plenty of African Americans that have migrated to Germany over the years, so i am guessing they can speak German, but for the Pennsylvania Dutch, not sure, i don't think being Amish means you have to be white, but i could also be wrong

My Husband & his Mother were baptized Mennonite.

Also I read an article in think in Marie Clair magazine some years back about Black Families who were also Amish. It can happen.

Mennonites are similar to Amish, and we have at least two black families in the church.

    No dear.

But I've been to Amish country plenty of times, loved it, and would happily join them !

Instead, I just buy their cookbooks, since there isn't electricity, nor Internet.

They call people outside of their communities...........The English ! LOL !
