When is it okay for a conventional fighter to go to southpaw?

Right now, I'm a conventional fighter. I'm right handed, but my left hand is my power hand, so I have a snappy hard left jab. The hardest punch in my arsenal is my right hook, but I rarely land/use it.

I've entertained the idea of switching to southpaw. Naturally, I feel pretty clumsy as a southpaw fighter, but the advantages would be I could switch hit like Hagler.

Also, I like to use the lead hook, so my right hook would be more active. My right jab however is slow, but from what I've read most southpaws don't really use the jab as much.

When I've practiced as a southpaw, I notice I throw a lot of lead lefts.

I guess my real question is... when is acceptable for a fighter to switch? If I do make the switch, any smarter way of making the transition easier?

PS. I am doing this with MMA/Muay Thai in mind, not just boxing. I shoot in with my takedowns with my left side forward as well.

Update:

I was a striker first, then I switched to grappling. I had an amateur MMA career that started ten years ago.

I've been out of the game for a while, because I blew out my knee. I've sparred a couple people over the past few weeks (including a pro boxer), and I've done pretty well.

I put two videos for you guys to see my technique. I will say I wasn't a very good fighter, but I loved competition.

I didn't cross train in boxing in either of these vids. First vid shows my striking; second shows more of my ground work. I've improved immensely since then, but you get to have a look.

I would. Learning to fight in different stances really helps.

Its helped me win a few fights.

but learn to use both. not just one.

...WTF? you sound like the most awkward fighter ever. you're completely backwards from what you wrote here. How experienced are you? No offense, but if you have less than 2 years of training you simply haven't developed your game yet and that's why everything feels weird. I think you should continue fighting conventional, but if you have been fighting for a while (3+years) and you still feel this way I'd say try switching because of what you wrote... but then you said for MMA you like takedowns with your left foot forward... which is something most conventional boxers have to work hard to get down because naturally people like their strong foot forward for takedowns... I honestly don't really know what to say except ask your coach. he knows you better than you or i do.

well if you saw the rampage jackson forrest griffin fight then i think about mid-way through the second round rampge should of switched cause of the immense damage to his left leg. you could also switch stances if your opponent is weaker vs a southpaw or if you have a stronger left than right.

training both sides as your lead is a good idea the biggest problem I found is not in the hands but when driving with the legs you don't get the same push with the weaker leg

you need to shoot with your lead leg, there isn't really any getting around that, and you can't switch just to shoot because that will just be ovbious.

its better to be 100 percent at one side than 50% at both (mr. lee)

but its good learn both itll just take time....i don't have enough so i concentrate on one

your footwork is atrocious, start there (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids....

Start right away, but make sure that in trying to become a good southpaw you degrade to a poor righty.
