I need help with percentages?

This is soo difficult for me. I have had it explained to me over a 100 times and I still cannot seem to understand. I was a terrible kid and because of that i ended up getting kicked out of all public schools, my mom then kicked me out and I was forced to get a job to start providing for myself.

I am needing to get my GED but I have no idea what to do, i don't know percentages, algebra...none of that.

I understand that with percentages, you always multiply by 100 but that is as far as i get.

Please help me!

If you have to speak to me in dummy terms, feel free to do so. I need to figure this out.

    The word "percent" means "per hundred" (Percent --> Per Cent --> Per Hundred)

    So 5% means "5 per 100" or "5 out of 100" or "5 in a 100"

    So if you have 100 hats, and 5% of them are red, then "5 out of every hundred" of them are red - 5 hats are red.

    If you have 200 rocks, and 5% of them are gray, then "5 out of every hundred" of them are grey - 10 rocks are gray.

    If 9 out of 10 dentists recommend Crest, then 90 out of 100 dentists recommend Crest. That means that "90 per 100" dentists recommend Crest . In other words, 90% of dentists recommend Crest.

    If you are asking about converting percents to decimals and decimals to percents, then:

    Percent to Decimal

    10.5% -- move the decimal 2 places left (0.105)

    Decimal to Percent

    0.884 -- move the decimal 2 places right and add the % sign (88.4%)

    (Moving the decimal 2 places left is equivalent to dividing by 100. Moving the decimal 2 places right is equivalent to multiplying by 100.)

    Percent just means "per hundred." Think of one dollar -- it is 100 cents.

    So 1/4 of a dollar is 25 cents.

    But 1/4 = 25 percent. See -- exactly the same idea.

    Since 1/2 a dollar is 50 cents,

    1/2 = 50 percent = 50% in symbols.

    Whenever you see the % symbol you can replace it with one hundredth written either as a fraction or as a decimal.

    % = 1/100 = .01

    Also important 100% = 100(1/100) = 1. So when you mutiply by 100% you are really multiplyin by 1 and so nothing changes except the way it looks.

    So to change 35% to a decimal, replace % with.01 (and multiply)

    35% = 35(.01) = .35

    To change to a fraction, replace it wioth 1/100 like this:

    35% = 35(1/100) = 35/100 which you can reduce to 7/20 by dividing top and bottom by 5.)

    I hope this can get you started. If you can understand $1 = 100 cents, then you can do percent problems. You just need to learn the rules and follow them to do it efficiently.

    There are three basic problems -- here is their structure:

    1) What is A% of B ? Example. What is 5% of 60?

    2) A is what % of B ? Example. 16 is what % of 64?

    3) A is B % of what number? Example. 8 is 15% of what number.

    In each case you replace the word "of" with multiplication. Replace "what" with X. The word "is" becomes =. Then you solve for X (if you know a little algebra. If not, just look at the results and try to memorize what gets divided by what for each type.)

    What is 5% of 60 becomes X = 5%• 60 = .05•60 = 3.00 = 3. So 3 is 5% of 60. Here you simply multiply.

    16 is what % of 64 become 16 = X%•64 ▬► 16 = X(.01)•64 ▬► 16 = X•(.64)

    We divde by .64 and get X = 16/.64 = 25. So 15 is 25% of 64.

    Here you divide the 16 by 64 and convert to a percent.

    Note to convert a fraction to percent multiply by 100% (remember it = 1). So here the procedure you need to learn is 16/64 = 14. Then 1/4 • 100% = 25%

    Finally 8 is 15% of what number becomes 8 = 15% • X. Here we just divide by 15% like this. X = 8/15% = 8/15(.01) = 8/.15 = 53.3333... This would have been better as a fraction, so let's do it that way to.

    X = 8/15% = 8 /(15/100) = 8•(100/15) [recall - invert and multiply]

    = 800/15 = 53 and 1/3

    There are many extra details to be learned. If you learn them a little at a time you will not be overwhelmed. It may see like a lot, but there are shortcuts.

    For exampe, you know 1/2 of a 1/2 is 1/4, right?

    So if 1/2 = 50% then 1/4 must be half of that, so 1/4 = 25%.

    1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4, so 3/4 must be 50% + 25% = 75%.

    I hope this is beginning to make some sense for you. You just need to take your time, concentrate and learn a little but each day. If you can do arithmetic, you can do percents. It is just using 100 as the denominator and nothing more.

    It depends on what you are working on with percentages but a percentage is how much a number is of another number. Lets say there is 654 people in a city. 300 have a car. You first find the decimal by dividing 300 by 654 which is about .48 then you multiply by 100 which would move the decimal over two slots to give u the percentage of 48%. So 48% of people in that city own a car. Hope this helped didn't really know what u wanted to know.

    all you do is move the decimle the (.) dot two places to the right

    let me show you

    6.8 = 680%

    or two places to the left

    182% = 1.82

    Source(s): i hope i helped a little
