Is this an OK diet for my English Bulldog puppy?
I've got a new English Bulldog puppy who is 11 weeks old and is about 14 pounds. My other half decided it was a good idea to buy a 30 pound bag of Nutro Natural Choice dog food before properly researching.
Here is the dog food: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/sh...
I believe the dry food was making him poop way too much so I cut back on his intake. I am now feeding him 1/4 cup of wet food, 1/4 cup of the dry food, and 3/4 cups of long grain steamed white rice, 3 times a day. Here is the wet food I'm feeding him: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/sh...
The rice should help with his poops, and the wet food should make up for the poor meat content in the dry food. I'm only feeding him this diet until his big 30 pound bag of dry food runs out, then we are switching him to a higher quality food.
Is this an ok diet for now? Should I add anything else into his meals? Should I just switch to another high quality dry food and just ditch the big bag of Nutro?
Thanks for you answers.

Buy a quality food (Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo, Innova, Halo, Wellness, Solid Gold) and make the transition according to the directions on the bag (1/4 new 3/4 old for a few days, 1/2-1/2 few days, 3/4-1/4 until the old is gone).

Hi,
We have a 12 week old puppy and we have simply carried on using the same food that the breeder was feeding him. It's a dry food and it has been great, it's called Royal Canin. We haven't had any poo problems! It sounds to me like he's having a lot of rice. I can't say whether this is a good diet or not but the dry dog foods are meant to be complete in themselves and don't need anything else adding to them. As changes in diet can upset a puppy's digestion I think I would try to avoid too many changes in his diet.
Personally, I think I would either put up with the big poos when feeding the puppy (100%) food your boyfriend got (at least until you've used up the whole bag), or I would switch now to a 'better' brand. Puppies are growing so much and need the proper balance of nutrients and I wouldn't want to take any chances by guessing if the diet you suggest is adequate for his energy requirements, growing bones, immune system etc etc.
Anyway just my opinion, enjoy your new puppy, I love bulldogs. :)

If the breeder told you it was a belly button repair and not a unbelical hernia repaire there is your first sign to stay away from the breeder. Umbelical hernia's are cased at birth when the mom bites the umbelical cord sometiimes pulling too hard. Its nice that the breeder is having this fixed for you but usually its not life treathing and can be done at the same time of spay/neuter to prefent the dog from needing sedation twice. This has nothing to do with the weight of the dog. Only proper nutriton and excercise will help a weight problems. Good luck

I would just ditch the Nutro. You're obviously having to do way too much work to make it work for him, and the wet food will actually loosen his stool which you're then having to counteract with the rice, and rice actually doesn't hold much nutritional value for dogs. It'd be easier just to switch him to a quality dry food. Some good ones to look for are Innova or Innova Evo, Wellness or Wellness Core, Artemis, Canidae, Taste of the Wild, Orijens, Solid Gold, etc. You won't have to add anything to it, and the grain-free varieties in particular will give him firmer stools.
