Tell us how much each fuel is per litre and I can give you an exact comparison...I sell propane and fuel oil in Ontario, Canada so I run these comparisons all the time. The comparison can vary quite a bit depending on where you live. Generally speaking you are going to spend the most on electricity, 80% of that on oil, 70% on propane, and 50% if you had natural gas available.

Don't forget though there are other factors like storage tank rentals to put into the equation...

Edit: Geo thermal is a great option...If you plan on keeping the house for more than 12 years. The installation cost takes that long before you are saving any money back. It does increase the value of your home, but not enough to cover the installation cost if you sold it in 5 years. ( I sell these too! ) You also still need to have a make up heating unit that is using electricity or fuel to ensure you have adequate heat year round...

I live in minnesota as well. You can buy propane cheaper than fuel oil. Both are expensive though as is every thing else.

The cost is going to be about the same. Some people consider fuel oil to be safer. If it was me I would just install a geothermal system.
