Withholding an Employees Pay?

I work - well now it's "worked" (past tense) for a company located in Texas that withheld a significant portion of my first paycheck with them. When I received the check and questioned the amount they said they "hold X amount of hours of pay until the end of my relationship with them".

I was never informed of this, nor did I agree to this. I know in my state you can't do this, but as this company is located in Texas I'm not as knowledgeable in the wage laws.

Can a company in Texas withhold a portion of an employees paycheck indefinitely without a written agreement or a court order?

Update:

Actually, they terminated me when I questioned them about it, stating I was never informed and never signed anything agreeing to it. So, now I guess my relationship with them is over and they have to pay me my damn money!!

Not that I know of, no. Best thing to do is contact your state's Board of Labor and file a complaint. You will get your pay.

Look at the positive side of holding back 2- weeks wages. If their is a lay off in the company you will get the pay then as to help you through. Most companys that I had worked for did this. Especially State, Federal, Universities, ect.

You need to get it together and get educated to the facts. Your actions to quit was wrong.

I am in my 50's and have worked in several different States - sounds like a 100% crock to me.

If you google attorney referral for your state and area you'll be able to find an attorney who specializes in labor law and have a consultation for either free or 25-50 is generally what I have seen.

Companies get away with things like that because (A) People let them and (B) because many people believe they can.

    Your wage is yours!

    Good luck.
