How do you receive your child support payments?

If your divorce or separation was uncontested and you agreed on terms for child support before going to court, how do you get the payment? Is it sent to a third party and then sent to you? Do you and the other parent keep detailed records of payments sent/received? Is a check mailed or are funds transferred from one account to another? Have you ever heard of Paypal being used so there is a detailed record, but nothing to get lost in the mail?

You certainly have the option of handling the payments directly between the two parties, which can happen in an ideal situation. I'm sure a paying party would prefer that over having a government agency in his/her pocket.

Unfortunately, that arrangement doesn't always work (due to many reasons) and it is necessary to have that third party orchestrate the payment plan. If a State agency is used, the option of having electronic transfer is available.

Congratulations to all parents who support their children financially and otherwise!!

  • My divorce /child support was ordered in NY state.

Right from the beginning his wages were garnished...his employer send the amount to a Child Support Collection Agency who deposited into an account, then drew a check off that account and sent it to me.....worked like smooth clockwork as long as he was working. Plus, a third party appointed by Family Court was keeping tabs on whether he was paying ( the collection agency), had the legal right to review the amount every few years (took that worry away from me), and handled the situation if he stopped paying.

All child support payments to date have been satisfied including arrears that were owed.

You go through the Friend of the Court, And if you can have his money come right out of his paycheck, that way he can't say he mailed it, when you haven't received it. His employer will deduct it from his pay and mail it to the Friend of the court. They in-turn mail it to you.

You must have a court ordered payment plan set up. They will keep records of it, All so you will have a receipt.

Always use the court system to get your child support, that way they keep track of all payments made. If the payer does not pay, most state will automaticly issue a warrent for that person.

Go through the child support disbursement unit in your state. Not paypal.
