What Makes A Pro Wrestler More Successful In Wrestling: Their Gimmick Or Their Actual Wrestling Talent?
Im Only Asking This Because It Seems As If Wrestlers Are More Successful When They Have Good Gimmicks, And It Seems Like It Is Not About Wrestling Skill Anymore. Your Thoughts? Thanks!

Seriously today when wrestling's infested of casual fans who acctually watches wrestling for the storylines I would have to say the gimmick.
Lets take Ultimate Warrior for example.
He doesn't have that much talent or doesn't have any talent at all but then he becomes one of the most beloved wrestlers because simply of his gimmick.
He's very successful because of that even if he barely has any moves.
Simply because his gimmick's very appealing to the fans.
And how about DX.
I know HHH and HBK are fabulous wrestlers but some of these casual fans just likes him because of their gimmick.
They don't even remember their matches they just watch their crazy antics on RAW.
That's all these casual fans and those little kids being DX fans simply because they "painted Vince's jet plane"
And with that they're successful.
Now we see the talented wrestlers that doesn't go anywhere because they don't have something apperantly very suiting to the fans.
Jamie Noble for example he's a very very talented wrestler and he's great at the mic but then he's not your typical big muscular guy.
He's not the biggest and doesn't stand out.
In WWE you have to be have muscles after muscles or just somebody who stands out with their moves.
I know Jamie could stand out with his wrestling moves this but WWE with Vince loving big mens as his army Jamie Noble isn't typically your Batista or John Cena.
And he doesn't have the right gimmick to be even considered a midcarder.
Right now to be honest to be successful in wrestling outside of WWE is very hard.
Here in wrestling to be successful in wrestling you have to be in WWE simple as that.
You can't be successful in wrestling the only way to be successful is to be successful in sports-entertainment.
That's because of how Vince made that you could never be successful in professional wrestling.
How he established sports entertainment using wrestling years ago.
Years ago I would have to say the talents would be the one that you need to have a lot of to be successful in wrestling.
That's because Vince hasn't established sports entertainment that strong as it is today.
I'm talking about in the 80s when those little promotions are still standing strong.
I would also say the same thing in the early 90s when Vince acctually had eye for talent.
He made those who has talents big stars.
When WWE focused less about the gimmicks and storylines and focused more into the grappling.
But now all we see that the wrestlers that are successful are those who has something appealing to the kids.
The kids don't watch wrestling for the matches they watch it for the storylines like I had stated before.
Those kids don't want to watch a 20-minute match with submission holds and technical wrestling they wouldrather watch a 5 minute match with someone's hand tied behind his back getting beaten up by a leprechaun.
And some casual fans are finding it entertaining.
That's just the nature Vince McMahon established when he started sports entertainment.

A gimmick gets you over, wrestling skill keeps you there. If you can't walk the walk a gimmick is meaningless, you need to be able to wrestle at a decent and entertaining level to make it to the top but its the gimmick that makes the fan connection for you. Its rare for a wrestler to get over on skill alone, even Benoit had Toothless Aggression, but at the end of the day you don't stay on top without being good enough in the ring.

It's all about gimmick man, just take a good look at :
1. Hulk Hogan
Vince's big gun. The right man in the right gimmick at the right time. Hogan's enormous charisma, larger-than-life persona, and positive role model for the children, enabled Vince to turn Hogan and the WWF into a worldwide company. Hogan was the main reason Wrestlemania was a success and enabled Vince to keep doing them.
2. Stone Cold
He defined the "Attitude Era". That whole era was wrapped up in one 250-pound walking bad attitude known as Stone Cold. His time in the WWE is comparatively brief but for those few years nobody was a bigger star or drew in more viewers and fans to the arenas than Stone Cold.
3. The Rock
Same as Hogan
4. The Undertaker
The Undertaker's gimmick was so unique when he first appeared and his gimmick is absolutely fascinating because he portrays his gimmick so well with perfection. The Undertaker's character actually seems believable because he portrays his character so well. The Undertaker's gimmick is rare because many gimmicks similar to Undertaker's gimmick have all failed, but The Undertaker's gimmick continues to sell to fans even to this day. The Undertaker has constantly adjusted and revised his gimmick so that his gimmick wouldn't get repetitive or boring. The Undertaker's gimmick is simply phenomenal and its definitely makes The Undertaker stand out from the other characters in WWE. The Undertaker is a legend and his matches, feuds, and legacies will all be cherished by his fans.

do you really expect people to real ALL of your description? I couldnt do that. My answer is I used to watch wrestling in the early 90's. back then the acting and story were the reason I watched because it was fun seeing your favorite wrestler beat up a bad guy. also the women of the WWF were always so attractive. Besides, if it werent for story then whats the point of watching fake wrestling? It would have to be real or nobody would watch it. I think most people wouldnt watch real wrestling without a story anyway. Would you? The thing I dont like about wrestling is that they discard wrestlers after they feel their popularity goes down. I would like to see Lex Luger and Yokozuna and Bret Hart or Stone Cold still wrestling.

Gimmicks

REAL TALENT OH ITS REAL ITS DAMN REAL and true and stuff....
1. Kurt Angle - went no where with the goofy "ah gee shucks I'm a singing cowboy dum dum" gimmick early in the decade. Once given the token championship due to Sept 11 he became one of the best champions ever...and of course working with Benoit helped a lot.
2. Rey Mysterio - won over the audience with his spectacular style of high flying.
3. Eddie Guerrero - went nowhere with the "mama-cita" crap in WWE. But given the opportunity to work the traditional rudo style or as I like to call it "hecho en mexico" heel style he started to have great matches on Smackdown 2003 which lead to a feud with Edge which lead to World Title...
4. RING OF HONOR - gimmicks are kept to a bare minimum but do exist and tend to be simple. Nothing more complicated than a mask or claiming to be from another country. It works and several stars were created using this method.

The fact that they suck upto Vince?
You are right it is not about wrestling skill any more (he still dosn't have a good gimmick but) John Cena is successful and he is robotic. .:CENA_SUCKS:.
So Triple H is married to Steph, Cena sucks upto Vince but Orton who has a good gimmick and good in-ring skills has made it. Orton made it through wrestling skills but then again you are right more make it through gimmicks.
Eugene and Doink didn't make it but look at Undertaker or Edge (Opportunist) and when he made his return Chris Jericho (Saviour). All these have good gimmicks but still made it through Wrestling Skills.
I give up because although I agree through you make it with Gimmicks, being realistic more have made it through talent and/or sucking up to Vince.
Vince seems to see talent in Cena through both. The fans don't see talent in Cena through either.
Vince sees talent in Orton through both. So do the Fans.
So its a mix and even if some do more than the other, it about mix and/or sucking up to Vince the way there make it.

I think gimmick because the whole shows are set up. The 'Signature moves' and the music and themes are all gimmicks and are what attract the fans.

well with the undertaker the gimmick was horrible and he had great talent people in the wrestling business said if it werent for the undertakers abilities he wouldnt be here now so definitely talent
