If I lift 290 lbs on a bench press machine, how much does that equal on a free weight bench?

My friend can do 290 lbs on a bench press machine but he questions the accuracy of the machine. How much would 290 lbs equal on a regular free weight bench? Also, what's the average bench press for a 16 yr old that is 5'7" and weighs 137 lbs? THANKS!

on a free weight it would prob be 260-275 because the bar weights about 20-30 lbs.

there is no average, it all depends on your strength.

some can do 100 lbs, some can do 150, some can do 250,

pick a weight u are comfortable with and go up from there. dont be stupid and try to do sumthing u cant and end up injuring yourself.

Firstly, I know you're stretching the truth a little bit.

There's no one who is THAT short, weighing THAT little who can bench almost 300 lbs. You do realize, that's more than twice their own weight, right?

Anyway, bench machines are entirely accurate, depending on where you go. The machine could be malfunctioning.

I've used both, extensively, and I've never noticed a difference.
