how do u measure rain fall to estimate how much water you can harvest from a roof top?

i do not know how to measure the amonut of water you can harvest from my rooftop, i need this to present to work in my community. by the way i am not very good at maths

    a very rough estimate is the area of the roofed space as it relates to your foundation. IE you have a house that's 20x 50 ft if that's all roofed then you can get 1000 ft^2 x Rainfall in inches of water

    so lets say you get 1 foot of rain to make the math easy

    that's 1000 cubic feet of water. Do the conversions from cubic feet to gallons and you're set.
