I am tracing my family tree and come to a stand still?

Question

I have no one in the family to ask, wonder if anyone out there has any ideas, my great grandad was born in 1882 and was a ships stoker, i found that out from my grandad birth cert, I looked at the 1911 census but only found my g, gran. G, grandad must have been away on a ship somewhere, don`t know where he was born so don`t know where to start to try to find his past, can someone help please?

Update:

his name was george thomas thompson his father was also george thomas thompson but don`t have a birth date for him

1911 census they lived in preston lancashire

You could put his name  and someone will come along to help.  There are a lot of good searchers here.  What was your grandmother and great grandmother's name.
There are a flock of Georges with sons named George.
