Gas Leak - How much will it cost?
I have a slight gas leak in my car - it has been smelling like gas for weeks but I have not seen any leaking until this morning. Also, the car has had trouble starting. It takes 2-3 times to start the engine. I know that this is because of the leak.
What I need is an estimate of how much the repair might cost. I understand that I might just need a new cap, but what if it's worse? Does anyone know from experience how much it could cost?
I had already brought it to the mechanic. This morning they told me it was the fuel pump. The pump is $600 and the labor is around $300. So I'm taking a different route and buying the part separately and having a different mechanic do it (my mother's friend)

Stop driving it!! Nobody can give you an estimate from this information, it could be a gas line, it could be the tank, it could be many different items, every newer car has more than one gas line. But if it catches fire (as mine did) it wil get a lot more expensive, and you could be injured or even worse. Don't take any chances, get it to the mechanic.

Shut off the gasoline on the meter. Get a pipe wrench and begin unscrewing the pipes. Buy a few pipe dope out of your ironmongery store approximately $three. dab at the ends, and reassembly the whole lot. Turn the gasoline again on and verify for leaks with soapy water at every joint. That's it.
