What? How can there be no adverts?

We have just got a HD TV and are pleasantly bemused by the lack of advertisments on some channels. Does anyone know why this is, how they fund broadcasts and how do we find out the names of the places that are shown? (We live in Tasmania Australia)

    Because you pay more for HD tv, so there's less of a need for ads to make money (:
