What major is best if I want to be a social worker?

This September I will begin my senior year of high school. I know I want to become a social worker and help others give them advice and what not. Yet, I am confused as to what I should major in this is crucial to me because I want to start applying to colleges and in order to do so I need to know what majors the universities offer. This is why i need to know what should i major in since I want to be a social worker?

    ... Social Work.

No joke, that is an actual major at a great deal of colleges and universities across the U.S. For example, I go to the University of Wisconsin at Madison and I knew quite a few people majoring in Social Work. Good luck!

I would recommend you take the MBTI Personality Assessment as an important first step. Please visit my website www.innerviewselfdiscovery.com. Once you validate the job tasks and job environment that is best suited for your personality the rest will fall into place. You'll want to look for a school that offers the best program for your course of study. You might find you may want to pursue a degree in psychology. There's an old saying, "Don't put the horse in front of the carriage." Don't pick your college until you know what your major is.

You can also meet with your high school counselor and see what personality assessments your high school has available to you. To be truthful sometimes the questions on some assessments can confuse you more. That's why I like the MBTI.

    Good Luck,

first off, and this is a big one that almost no incoming freshman get: your major, especially what you THINK it is until your junior year, DOES NOT MATTER.

    whew. lot of emphasis.

your major is irrelevant for 90% of careers. of the remaining 10%, that's usually biologic fields or fields like journalism, where you actually learn about your professed profession.

for social work, major in "social work" if it's offered. however, you'll find that you dont necessarily want to go to a school that offers SW, particularly because theyre generally the crappier schools. specific majors like that tend to offer indicative details of a college.

this is what im telling you, and its what any college advisor worth his/her salt will say: choose what makes you happy, even if its Music Theory, Education, or Underwater Basketweaving. the last major is a very unfunny funny joke, but it makes the point clear: do what you want. become a happy, balanced, and educated person, not a person who tries to strike a track of life that they feel is mandated by any higher authority.

the long and short: social workers dont compete for jobs. they need you, so majors and college choices are irrelevant. you also may find that being a "social worker" isnt the best way for you to make an impact on people, it could be politics, teaching, or any number of things. so basically, go where your friends are, where you can do well, and where you have alternatives in case you decide that social work fot he county/city isnt what you want

check out site below, scroll down to Public Affairs then to Social work and social services. click on that and it will take you to a map of the US, click on any state to see what colleges in that state offer that major.

You should major in Human Services.

At my community college, if you major in human services, there are 'sub majors' which are:

    -Social Work

    -Drug and Alcohol Councilor

    -Psychology

    -Behavioral Science

    This is for my school.
