Does live algae float or sink in water?

I am trying to grow algae from my pond to convert into biofuel, and I just added it to a bucket filled with water from the pond. It is sinking to the bottom, and I am not sure if this means it is dead or not.

Thanks!

They float on top of the water. You can actually see organisms that eat algae come to the surface to eat it. A lot of times it sticks to abiotic stuff like rocks and pebbles, sticks, and anything that is not living that might be around the algae.

    Hope it helps.

Both. Unicellular algae is distributed throughout the water column. Filamentous algae lives on the bottom but the mat retains oxygen bubbles which causes it to rise to the surface. As long as it looks bright green, you're OK.
