Best target pistol/revolver?
What is truely the best pistol or revolver for target shooting in the .22lr caliber? I've been looking at a walther p22, ruger mark III, and the one I'm thinking about buying the most, the smith and wesson model 617 revolver? I really like this one the most I think, how are accuracy on the others?

Consider this.
Most people cannot "outshoot" a decent .22 cal target pistol.
Fit & feel have a lot to do with it regardless of cost.
The Ruger is relatively inexpensive yet perfectly capable of winning matches in the right hands.
The Walther costs more but unless you really work at it will not make you a better marksman.
The High Standard Supermatic Trophy is an excellent choice (best?) & runs about $700 new.
You can spend much more & much less on target pistol .
Just an example, had the HSST now have a Browning Buckmark ( basically an inexpensive camp gun w/ a heavy barrel ) .
Have a friend who can clean targets with it .
I am so rusty from lack of practice ( & age) that the best there is would not make any difference.
If you have the cash & ability a "better " pistol w/ fine sight , trigger & balance adjustment will give you a scoring edge.
Best regards

You don't say which target discipline you might want to shoot, but for most you will be better off with a semi-auto. I think I would go with the Ruger Mark III 22/45 with the bull barrel, which should be reliable and very accurate out of the box at less than half the price of the S&W Model 41 mentioned in another post. It has the same grip size and angle as a Colt M1911, which will help you if in the future you want to add a 1911 to your shooting box.
The only criticism I have of the Ruger is the trigger, which tends to be a little rough, especially compared to the S&W 41. If you feel the need you can get the trigger cleaned up by a gunsmith for $100 or less, so you still will have spent far less than the price of the S&W 41.
Good luck. Shoot well!

It is slightly more expensive, but I would look at a SIG Trailside. It will cleanly outshoot the Walther in about any catagory and in my opinion outshoots the Ruger as well. They have about the best trigger you can buy for under $1,500.
Now, from the standpoint of a .22LR revolver, as previously stated, for most forms of actual competitive .22LR target shooting you'll need a semi - auto. For plinking it is purely about preference. In a .22 I much prefer a crisp, light single action semi auto trigger to the double action of a revolver. Often the single action trigger on a revolver is really nice, but then you have to thumb the hammer which is a pain if you want to do a rapid fire string. (Unless you try and fan the hammer, which I'm not cowboy enough to do)

Straight up target shooting. Ruger Mark III or 22/45 mark III, Smith and Wesson Model 22A, Beretta Neo, and my personal favorite is the Browning Buck Mark.
As for the Walther p22 I much prefer the Sig Sauer Mosquito over the Walter. Over fit and feel in my hand is what I am basing it on. It is also closer to the size of a full size Sig (or handgun in general).
I think though for the use I would go with the Ruger or Browning.

definately the ruger mark3. i have a walther p22 and its meant for fun not accuracy. the mark 3 is like the 1911 of 22's its a nail driver and kinda hard to miss. the walther is really fun but its not going to compete with a mark3 on accuracy. that walther is for going out and having a good time with a little comfortable neat looking 22pistol

The Smith & Wesson Model 41 Match Target is the best American made "target pistol", as in; for Competitative Target Shooting. But it costs around $1200. Now, if we want to get back to the reality of what I believe was the unstated intent of your question, the best all around plinker is the Ruger MkIII.

the smith is great. So is the mark111. I'd rule out the walther but consider the sig mosquito.
