I'm a professional that enjoys shooting sports as a hobby among other things. I tend to only answer questions if I think I have something relevant to contribute, and often will do the research because the question amuses me. I own a small business, Thinkingblade Knives, and was a competitive archer for a number of years. So between bows, bullets and blades most often you are going to find my answers in the Hunting section. Among other things I'm a statistician and engineer so most of my answers will have a technical bent to them. I don't list my qualifications as a justification for an answer because I see one of the value of Yahoo Answers as being a forum where if someone asks a question, and gets an answer they actually have to think about the answer to evaluate it's credibility and reasonableness. Afterall, behind a keyboard I can stick a thrown knife in a dragonfly, shoot a crow out the sky blindfolded with a bow and shoot the eyes out of a potato at a mile.

  • Which left eject AR?

So I've got a conventional right eject frankenAR with a Stag lower, Hogue grips, Timiney trigger, etc. I've decided that I'd really like a left handed eject. I only know of two companies making them, Stag and Rock River Arms. I've read the reviews and the specs. I'm planning on 3 Gun sort of shooting ... well if I ever get the time. However, not really thinking about NRA bullseye. So any other lefties out there?

  • Question about off set sights for an AR style rifle - need to hear from the LEFTIES!?

Previously, I asked a question regarding what to put on my new LaRue Tactical PredatAR .308. Had some great answers and am convinced to go with an SWFA optic.

Further, I was also convinced to go with off angle BUIS rather than attempt to co-witness or go with folding. So, here's the question. I'm a lefty and I shoot rifles lefty and always have. However, the rifle is a standard right side eject. In a typical right side off angle set of sights, rotating the rifle pushes the brass further up into the air, but rotating that direction is a bit awkward for a lefty. There are left side angle sights, but I'm curious if any lefties have run into rotating the rifle that direction ends up throwing hot brass right into their off arm?

What solutions have you guys used?

  • What to put on a LaRue Tactical PredatAR .308?

Almost 2 years ago I got caught up in the furor and decided I needed to get an order in for a .308 tactical style rifle before legal issues made that problematic. Ostensibly it would be for heavy metal division 3 gun. So, after some feedback here I ended up ordering a LaRue Tactical PredatAR in .308 and waited. And waited some more. And forgot about it until a week or two ago when they got to mine. Now in reality I don't have time for 3 gun for probably at least a couple more years so I'm mostly likely to just take it to the range. So what optic would you put on it? Since I'm going to be at a range I think my nearest is 300 yards. With what I paid for it I'm looking for something I can wring it out a bit with, so need better than minute of man sort of glass. Bad weather is coming so I have some time to set it up before I would start shooting it more regularly. What do you suggest? Oh and bonus thumbs up for back up irons that work with the optics system and mount.

  • What is your best gun cleaning trick?

Well, the end of the semester is around the corner so it is time to catch up on the gun cleaning. As many of you know I have a modest collection that gets checked about once a quarter. I will start with one of mine, for .22 barrels I wrap the cleaning swatch around a q tip to do the pre soak of solvent and the final wipe. It is a tight enough fit to get into the rifling and will not damage anything coming from the muzzle. I push it with a cleaning rod with nothing screwed into the end. What is yours?

  • Trying to find the name of a children's book?

There was a book from my youth - so, no later publish date than maybe 1985, but I remember it as being much older than that - probably published in the late 60s.

I don't remember the story - but it was illustrated, and relatively thin and a large format book - so not one of the smaller Dr. Suess size sort of children's books. It was hard cover.

A particular illustration that I remember was that it was night, in a forest, and there was a particular kind of creature like a bird but had something funny with it's feet - maybe wheels instead of feet, (but I might be confusing that with Ozma of Oz) the image on the page was mostly black with the creature in some bright colors on a tree branch.

The illustration was sort of cartoonish, not realistic.

I realize this isn't much to go on - but I've not found it yet in many years of searching so I thought I might throw the net a bit wider.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Need suggestions on a .308 3 - Gun Rifle ...?

Ok, so the paranoia has hit me too and I'm concerned about an AWB. I've got an AR that I like, and I already know why my second one is going to be so I'm set there. So, now I'm looking for Heavy Metal division gear. I'm not looking for a hunting rifle - I do my hunting with a bow (seriously, I'm the same color as a black tail deer, about the same size and have black hair. Stand me next to a branch that looks like antlers ...) and shoot for competition mostly. I'm not even really ready to shoot a bunch of 3 - gun due to grad school (what the HELL was I thinking??!) but circumstances are moving this up the priority list.

So tuition is about $3,500 a semester which I get reimbursed by my company if I keep my grades up. So call that the budget. It's like getting a tax refund every semster. I only want one rifle in this class, so I want it to be a good one. But what? I've shot a few rounds through a generic AR-10 (I honestly don't remember the make) and a SCAR 16S (the 17S wasn't out yet, but I'm told they handle about the same) and an FNAR and a Kel-Tec bull pup and a few others. Not really enough to make a selection.

I've got other thoughts on hunting rifles (if I were to decide I need more range than my bow offers) and I'm not into Cowboy Action Shooting (although bonus points to anyone that can come up with a good cowboy name around Thinkingblade) so, not interested in a lever or slide gun right now.

So - are you part of the 3 - Gun nation and have an opinion? Let's see it, I'll read every word. You have links or suggestions for stuff I should read on this? I'll take a look. You love your .308 battle rifle and have experience in the "real world" with it instead of a game environment? Tell me why.

    Thanks,

  • What is a "Less than Honorable Discharge" from the Military?

I read an article today about the alleged shooter of the Sikh mosque in Wisconsin, Wade Michael Page. In the article it said that he left the Army with a "... less than honorable discharge." What does that mean exactly? I have heard of a "dishonorable discharge", but to be honest I don't really know what the circumstances have to be to warrant that. I was never in the military myself. Any veterans out there who could clarify this?

  • Looking for a good Red Dot Sight?

Several months ago I sent off my Smith and Wesson Model 41 to Clark Custom to have them perform their "Bullseye Optic" conversion on it, which involved a new barrel, trigger job and two tone chrome. Other than the grips and the optic it will look something like this:

    http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/images/SW41/STCCMOR...

It will not have any standard sights on it. I will still have the two other stock barrels, a 7" and 5" which have conventional sights if I want that, but this is set up for an optic.

So, the question is - what optic?

I see this gun as something I can play in Bullseye competition if I want, and potentially get serious about, but I'm not yet. I see this as something I can potentially do a little .22 action shooting with. I also see this as a super plinker pistol, dead nuts accurate as far as I can see with no soda can in my field of view safe.

So what dot sight? Because the barrel has the back land over the action removed for better reliability (to prevent .22 brass from getting caught there, which was happening periodically) I think I need some form of smaller reflex sight to prevent some kind of cantilevered monstrosity. I think 4 MOA dot is probably as large as I want to go as a balance between speed and precision.

I have some experience with tube style red dots - I have one on another pistol, and I have a lower cost reflex as well - but it is tall and there is a significant amount of angle effect at shorter distances.

So - Yahoo Hunters and Shooters - what do you recommend? I'm willing to pay for the right device - after all it is going onto a Clark Custom 41, but at the same time I'm not interested in just buying a name. Durability certainly matters, but it is going on a .22. Lighter weight is nice - but it is an all steel gun with a 6.5" barrel. So, what do you think?

  • Does Light have an inertial reference frame?

So, this is something that I have been puzzling about for a bit. We know from Einstein that at the speed of light time goes to 0. We also know that when the speed of light is measured in any reference frame it is a constant, and as long as the medium it is propogating through is the same, then the same constant.

So, lets assume for a moment that we are in the reference frame of light itself. Time doesn't propogate. So without delta T there can be no movement. So, that means as far as light goes, all things and all places have to exist simultaneously, regardless of when they happen in a non - light intertial reference frame.

Or to say it a different way. With some cool equipment I can measure light going from point A to point B. There is a distance and a time that it takes and I come up with the speed of light. However, if I am the light (no pun intented) then I have to be at points A and B simultaneously. Regardless of how far apart or how long it takes when measured in a different reference frame.

I don't really see how to reconcile that other than to think that light doesn't have an intertial reference frame, but that seems like a cheat. I've read a number of books about light and relativity and have never seen this addressed.

    Any takers?
