Question about off set sights for an AR style rifle - need to hear from the LEFTIES!?

Previously, I asked a question regarding what to put on my new LaRue Tactical PredatAR .308. Had some great answers and am convinced to go with an SWFA optic.

Further, I was also convinced to go with off angle BUIS rather than attempt to co-witness or go with folding. So, here's the question. I'm a lefty and I shoot rifles lefty and always have. However, the rifle is a standard right side eject. In a typical right side off angle set of sights, rotating the rifle pushes the brass further up into the air, but rotating that direction is a bit awkward for a lefty. There are left side angle sights, but I'm curious if any lefties have run into rotating the rifle that direction ends up throwing hot brass right into their off arm?

What solutions have you guys used?

I'm not a lefty, but there are some thing I want to point out anyways. First, every rifle will be a little bit different. Some rifles, if they are overgassed, will throw brass at the 2 o'clock. Other rifles, if the bolt moves slower, will throw brass at the 5 o'clock. And they may throw brass at any range in-between.

My father's LR308 and Bushmaster both throw brass at the 3 o'clock. My rifle, my Grendel build (which is the one I recommended you set yours up like, with an SWFA optic and canted irons) throws brass at the 5 o'clock. Obviously, shooting my rifle left handed is not an option, as that brass would hit me square in the chest or in the face with a 45 degree cant. Now, your LaRue has a shell deflector, which should limit the range to somewhere around 2-3 o'clock, but you should verify the angle beforehand...

The other issue is that the gasses that are pushing back the bolt carrier come out through the ejection port, which on a right handed, right held rifle is no big deal. For a lefty, those gasses go towards your face, which is made worse when canted upwards. I don't know about you, but I don't particularly like having burnt powder and whatever other particulates in my face.

Left canted irons would alleviate that somewhat, angling the ejection port down instead of up.

That's all the thought I had to offer. Good luck with it.

I am right handed, BUT, have shot left handed all my life, left eye dominate. Never had any interest in what your doing with the sights. Sounds to me like your saying your going to turn the rifle so it ejects the empties upwards, to use another set of sights ? Why when shooting offhand would your "off arm " be sticking UP in the air ? Like I say, this ain't my thing, but, why would you not just let the rifle slip in your hand keeping your arm below the rifle as normal ?

Remember those "see thru" scope rings ? I always found them laughable. Really in my mind, how far away would you be firing doing this switching of the sighting devise used ? Under 100 yards ? Under 50 yards ? What ever happened to just pointing the rifle as the Viet Nam Veterans were taught, for short shooting. I honestly like I say never even considered such a thing, IDK, at 50 yards I do know I can hit pretty darn well just pointing the rifle in the dark. Not hair splitting accuracy, but, a Raccoon sized critter, has not fared very well, EVER by dong this. Fancy, and new gadgets is fine, but, I just can't understand the reason, an AR has always done all I use them for very well just as is with IRONS.

ADDED : Read your comments sir, I believe shooting lefty as we do, I would roll the gun left. so your irons would be slanted off the right side of the rifle. Thus throwing empties out and away up and behind right. Then I would certainly, just rotate the forend in my right hand using the pistol grip, and thus maintaining my normal shooting position. I would NOT adjust my shooting position, ONLY the rifle.

You also likely know, we don't seem to have the least issue with shells out the right side in front of your face. Unless dirty powder, and your facing into the wind. I have never owned a left handed gun, I make the right handed ones, work the way want them.

    * Well sir, I am not sure regarding the comment about shooting ability. Not sure I shoot better then anyone here I may be speaking with. I honestly would very much enjoy shooting with many of the Regulars here though. That would be a GREAT day in my opinion. I credit some help coming from allot of pointing and leading with a shotgun. Very often just a little trail and error, will surprise you. Muscle memory sometimes develops, rapidly.

I'm not a lefty, but I practice shooting weak handed a good amount.

Trust me. Right handed off mount sights SUCK for trying to shoot left handed. And not for just the reasons to pointed out.

It's just incredibly uncomfortable and unnatural feeling.. The stock digs into your shoulder blade, and you can forget about keeping your cheekweld.

Find a set of lefty sights. You will be MUCH happier. Or just use a 45 degree rail mount and add the sights of your choose.

But if you do end up running right handed sights... The low tech solution would be to wear a long sleeved shirt...

Can't you buy right handed offsets and install them on the left side? Might be fugly but should work.
