Trying to find the name of a children's book?

There was a book from my youth - so, no later publish date than maybe 1985, but I remember it as being much older than that - probably published in the late 60s.

I don't remember the story - but it was illustrated, and relatively thin and a large format book - so not one of the smaller Dr. Suess size sort of children's books. It was hard cover.

A particular illustration that I remember was that it was night, in a forest, and there was a particular kind of creature like a bird but had something funny with it's feet - maybe wheels instead of feet, (but I might be confusing that with Ozma of Oz) the image on the page was mostly black with the creature in some bright colors on a tree branch.

The illustration was sort of cartoonish, not realistic.

I realize this isn't much to go on - but I've not found it yet in many years of searching so I thought I might throw the net a bit wider.

Thanks for your help.

Update:

Folks - good suggestion on where the wild things are - but I know it isn't that. A great book though. The creature on the page was small and if it talked it didn't say much.

I'm not sure, but maybe it's "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. Hope I helped!
