What's the significance of the U.S. vs. Mexico at Azteca outcome?

Costa Rica and Honduras have yet to play their sixth matchday, and the result of that match will determine much. Right now, the tables are:

Costa Rica - 12 points

U.S. - 10 points

Mexico - 9 points

Honduras - 7 points

El Salvador - 5 points

Trinidad and Tobago - 2 points

With Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and T&T having a match in hand. Afterwards, each team will have 4 matches remaining in the round.

Granted, El Salvador and T&T need to play right now, but that result is relatively insignificant unless they somehow shock the continent with ridiculous results later. Realistically, it's between Costa Rica, the U.S., Mexico, and Honduras for the top 3 spots, as #4 must play the fifth place team from South America to determine who qualifies. Worse case scenario for both U.S. and Mexico is if Honduras wins. Then the four teams will be separated by 3 points with 4 matchdays remaining. At that point, doing anything less than winning all four remaining matches may not guarantee #3. The U.S. will have a home match against Costa Rica and an away match against Honduras, while Mexico will have an away match against Costa Rica and a home match against Honduras.

So to be concise, much depends on the Honduras vs. Costa Rica match tonight.

EDIT: Actually, if the U.S. wins their next three matches, they are through, since one of them would be against Honduras, and Honduras still needs to play Mexico. If Mexico beats Honduras and wins 2 more and draws 1, at the very least they would be 4th in an incredible four-way goal difference tiebreaker, but most likely would qualify.

It means they have a better chance of going to the world cup. It doesn't mean usa is a bad team. Mexico has lost one time in azteca to costa rica, ONE TIME. so it doesn't mean much. right now Costa rica has 12 points USA has 10 points, mexico 9 and honduras 7. so USA is most likely going to the world cup and costa rica too. but mexico is gonna be close to not going if honduras wins today (they have a game today im pretty sure) Honduras will have 10 points and they will be tied with USA. only the 3 teams with the highest points advance.

well in the rankings for CONCACAF now costa rica is still first with 12 points. Honduras is second with 10 and the US is third with 10 because of goal differential. Mexico is now fourth with 9. and the top three at the end of this round go to the world cup. so mexico is in a better standing than what they were and they still have a chance to qualify but there are still a few games left in this round

Honesty I think it's very good. Mexico might even make it to the World Cup. I think the USA and Mexico will be the two teams that make it to the WC. I'm not a big big Mexico fan but providing that I'm not Mexican, but you said to be unbias and honest so. Anyway this shows that Mexico can take on tougher teams; they;ve done it before.

not too much. both are trying to qualify for the world cup and both have a few more games to play. the top 3 teams qualify and mexico is in 4th place so they really needed to win

It means that Mexico will be joining the US in South Africa next summer.

It basically means they still have a chance to go to the World Cup next year. And it also means that they get to brag about never losing to the US on home soil.
