Is it illegal to carry a 5-litre canister of petrol on a scooter?

The underseat storage is above the tank, and big enough to store quite a bit of extra petrol without affecting balance. But is it illegal or not?

A 5 litre petrol can is designed for emergency use not storage, the RAC the POLICE and ROSPA advice that you only ever carry these cans empty and only fill them for emergency use.

How far are you intending to go on the Scooter? my Motoroma ( RiP) used to do over 160 miles on a single tank which was enough for comfort reasons. However I obtained a second petrol tank from a 1980's Suzuki scooter, this was metal and the exact size for fitting into the Helmet well (fitted better than my skid lid). I then used the vacuum operated fuel valve and Tee'd this into the existing fuel system, this doubled my fuel capacity and gave me a range of 300 miles (extra weight of fuel offset) meant i could get to cornwall on one bikeful of petrol. The idea was to do Lands End to John O groats but That never came off..

The Tank I used was a CS50 Scooter tank, infact I still have it... ready for my next scooter project.

    EDIT....

Now who the Fcuk did i upset to get the negative thumbs down...

Yes I did do it no i'm not telling porkies..

You can carry 5L of petrol in a plastic can, providing it meets S.I. 1982/630 standard - it will have this on the can if it is compliant.

If it is always going to be onboard the scooter, be careful where you park the scooter.

Petrol must NOT be stored in a house, flat or dwelling.

Containers of petrol should only be stored in a well ventilated, secure, fire proof building, away from all sources of ignition e.g. fires lights and any electrical installation such as sockets.

Containers of petrol must not be stored under stairs or near doors, especially doors which could be a means of escape should a fire occur.

Ideally, there should be a fire extinguisher of foam or dry powder type, accessible to the storage place and a bucket of dry sand available to soak up any spillage.

Hello Read the advert it states off road use only. This is because there is no way of making it road legal. It is also to quick to be driven On a moped licence as a moped is no more than 50cc and not designed to exceed 31 MPH This has a declared top speed of 35 MPH. As you can purchase spare fuel cotnainers for various types of 2 wheel transport, I see no reason why not. Let's face it, in the event of a collision it's going to be no more or less safe than your regular fuel tank.

Best thing to do is, call your local constabulary and ask to talk to someone in "Traffic", be friendly and ask if they have motorcycle officers... And believe me those guys are usually really cool, very friendly and really REALLY know the law, and give you thier answer.

As it will probably be them that pull you over, take thier answer seriously. Failing that, find a scooter club and ask them.

Legality depends on where you are.

    It's certainly unsafe.

Your gas tank is designed to be at least somewhat crash resistant.

That canister isn't, and 5 litres of petrol is no joke if it's touched off.

Not illegal at all. Just remember to always carry a couple of road flares with you incase you run out or gas at night this way you will not only be able to signal others but it will help you light the way while fueling your bike.

    Hello

Legal as long as the container conforms to legal requirements.

Plastic has lower Maximum than Metal as less protection
