major dental work needed but not much money?
OK....extremely embarassing situation and a bit of a long story. For many, many years I stupidly neglected my teeth. I suffered from depression and to be honest, I didn't give a rats *** about my teeth and am really screwed now. I let most of my back teeth rot away. So now I cannot eat anything even slightly crispy or crunchy. For years I wouldnt step into a dentist office because I was too embarassed that I let my teeth get to this point. I know this is 100% my fault and in no way am I expecting to have someone baby me and say its not your fault, because I know that it would be bullsh**. So, today I swallowed my effing pride and went into a dentists office.looking for help and came out crying. The dentist made me feel like I was disgusting and not worth civil behaviour. Again, I was not there to hear, poor baby its not your fault, but I was hoping to be treated with respect. I went in there and told him I know that everything wrong with my teeth was my fault and I take full responsibility of it. I screwed up and now want to fix it and move on. What I wanted was for him to check out my teeth and tell me how I can make things better and he just didnt think I was worth his time. The worst thing for me about all this, I think, was breaking down in that damn dentist chair and crying.
Since I dont have a lot of money, a friend suggested to me that I go to university of toronto and it wouldnt be as expensive. My sister informed me though that they will not do anything for me because it would be too much work. Can anyone please suggest something I could do? Thanks!

Boy, what luck you must have. After not seeing a dentist for so long and finally going for help, you pick one of the biggest jerks in the city. I apologize to you on behalf of the dental profession. It's unfortunate that there are always a few bad apples around to give the vast majority a bad name. I can tell you that the dental schools in the US are all excellent places to obtain dental care and at reduced prices. Do you have any friends or family that can refer you to a caring professional? I wish you good luck.

First off, that dentist was being a jerk. Regardless of the situation, a dentist is there to help you, to treat your teeth and gums, not to make you feel bad when you finally get the courage to come in. You are the customer, dentists provide a service, so if they're rude, then take your business elsewhere.
A dental school could be a good lower-cost alternative.
The following site has some really good advice on dealing with dentists and a forum for support:

I hope you are able to find a good low-cost dentist. The sites I've seen are for low-cost dental in the U.S. not Canada. They are programs through the state government. Perhaps you could call your city or province government offices and see if they have any such programs. Good luck.

First, any patient deserves to be treated with respect. I am guessing there is some type of board or agency that regulates dentists in Ontario or in the whole of Canada. Report him to them.
Next, I would not assume your sister knows everything about how the University of Toronto selects patients. Who knows? Your case might be a very good case for educational purposes. Contact their dental school and talk to the person who makes appointments about your situation.
University dental schools can save you a substanital amount of money, and the dental students are well supervised by their professors. Find out, too, if there are any other dental schools in your area.

Actually, you should go to University of Toronto.
They will most likely fix your problems, but since it is a school facility it is going to take a very long time to do so. You should expect going there many times, much more than expected in a normal dental office.
Good luck =)
