How much heavier is an entry level hybrid bike and a mountain bike?
I don't know if I should get an entry level hybrid or an entry level mountain bike.
This will mainly be for the commute to school and for cruising around in the neighborhood.
Would it be better for me to ride a hybrid or a mountain bike with slicks? Which would help me climb paved hills better?

A hybrid bike will be lighter, and will have more narrow tires which mean less resistance and therefore faster speeds on the road. You can get them with or without front shock. If you do get one with a front shock, make sure it has a knob so that the shock can be either fixed (no shock) or open (shock absorbing) that way you get the best of both worlds and can adjust it to wherever you are riding.

You want to get a road bike instead. A mountain bike is a poor choice for the road, a hybrid would be much better and one without shocks like a fitness bike will be better still. You lose a lot of energy in the shocks and the rolling resistance of the tires. The quality of the components make more difference then the weight of the bike.

Most mountian bikes allow you to attach a carrier. Dont buy a bike that is cheap as you will have problems with it within a short period and issues getting the warrenty sorted by some thing mid range like a specialised/ trek etc
