Get a proper notebook. The netbooks are really designed as secondary computers, and can only really be used for browsing the internet, typing documents and looking at photos. A notebook can do all this, and way more, has a bigger screen (easier to see/read) a bigger keyboard (easier to type) and the disc drive you are after. They are not all that big these days either, there's plenty on the market at around 12 - 13 inches, which is only 2 inches bigger than most netbooks. You will also get a bigger hard drive and more RAM, which all equal faster computer. The battery life isn't as good, but it's worth the sacrifice.

Hope this helps, good luck with your purchase!!

Your requirement is not clear. As per what I understand you need a very basic laptop, now a days every laptop comes with CD/DVD drive, 1 GB RAM is minimum you get and 160 GB hard disks are not common for laptops. If you want cheaper stuff go for what is commonly available in market, which will mean that you should go for 250 or 320 GB. Your use should decide what configuration of laptop you should go out for, in worst case it should be the price. If price is the issue go for a desktop. If you are going to use it for just browsing through net and some entertainment then, take the Basic configuration and opt for Altech Lansing speakers and nVidia graphics card. Though both come for a price.

Another important thing you should look for is the post sales support, Dell has its support only in bangalore, as long as it is under warranty they will come to you any where in India and do the repairs but once warranty is over, you will have to bear the cost of even sending your laptop to Bangalore and back. While for HP you find some service centers at least in all major cities. given this situation I will count dell out until you live in or near Bangalore. Sony and Lenovo are costly brands and I am not sure about Acer.

So I would prefer to choose between HP and Compaq. As both are products of same company and there by giving you similar service. If you want more features go for HP else if you are more concerned about price then go for Compaq

    just a quick info--

ive used hp dell and mac --

mac is good if you have cash but i prefer hp- you can download more freely but mac has less virus...

hp is better than dell b/c

the cam and speakers are so much better-

    less trouble

    the tech ppl are nicer

    cheaper (than mac)

and if youre going to use this comp for a very long time i suggest getting the comps customized.

and if yorue going to go with dell, you should get a separate cam

o for both hp and dell - it cost me 1 thousand each... XP (customized)

and if you are in college or you travel a lot i suggest getting a desktop as your main and a netbook so you can use it while traveling--

so much more convenient when ure in school XPP

You have checked almost all the brands but you missed Apple. Check this source http://www.apple.com/in/students/ , they have some good offers for University students in India. I just checked the site and found out that Macbook starts from RS 49790 onwards. All the best .
