Can y^2 + 8x -9 be factored?

Help ! I could not figure this one out. It looks like it was a typo, but my teacher had already left school and I couldn't ask. I couldn't find, through my notes, any examples with two different variables like this.

    If that really is a y^2 and an 8x, then the answer is no. This involves two variables and can't be factored. Maybe your teacher was trying to see how observant you are.

    If it were y^2 and 8y, it could be factored.

    Apples and oranges = ?

    y =1

    x =1 therefore 1^2 + (8 X 1) = 9

    intuitive not factorable. I think typo.
