There is a new term for MPD called Dissociative Identity Disorder. It is an extreme form of dissociation. Most if not all of us have episodes of dissociation. Think of the last time you drove a long time in a car. Do you remember every mile you drove or were there periods of time when everything just seemed to blur together and you were surprised to find yourself 10 miles further down the road with no real memory of having passed those miles? That's the mildest form of dissociation.
People who have traumatic experiences can dissociate to protect themselves from the trauma of what happened. One young lady I know was raped by her mother's boyfriend on more than one occasion, made to live in her mother's basement whenever she wasn't at school and not fed at home until a school counselor finally noticed something was wrong when she was 11. To survive her childhood traumas, she learned to "not be there" when bad things were happening. She learned to "check out" mentally and feel nothing. Unfortunately, while this is a good coping mechanism when one is actually experiencing trauma, it doesn't go so well when one starts to be absent during everyday life. More and more things begin to trigger the episodes and this young lady eventually came to find herself coming home from having been out...with absolutely no memory of where she had been. Terrifying.
A person with true MPD has at least two "persons" who face the world for him or her and he/she had no control over who is in charge at any given time. It's not common to get to this extreme level of dissociation, but it can happen.
The young lady I mentioned, BTW, has had some excellent therapy and has dealt head-on with her life traumas. Bringing them out into the open and experiencing the fears, sadness, betrayals and other feelings fully for the first time while simultaneously learning how to relax and calm herself has made it so that she hasn't had a dissociative episode in about 2 years now. : )
Wishing you well.

When a person goes through severe trauma and abuse (most commonly sexual abuse), they 'dissociate' (disconnect from their thoughts and feelings and may psychologically step out of your body-a bit like daydreaming) so much that the mind goes into another person. Basically, because they can't physically get away, they mentally get away. This other personality can have different thoughts, feelings, be a different age, even have different eyesights etc. The diagnosis is having at least 2 DISTINCT different personalities. So if a person says 'I feel like part of me is saying yes, and the other saying no' this is not DID/MPD. When a person goes into another personality, when they return to their normal one, they may not remember what just happened. There's a good film called Sybil about a girl who was terribly abused by her mother, and developed about 16 different personalities, it's based on a true story. However it's quite a strong, sometimes disturbing film so it's up to you if you want to watch it. It's on youtube.
