Question about shooting shotgun slugs.?
I've always heard that you should never shoot plastic covered sabot slugs from smoothbore barrels. Why is that?
Also, is it safe to shoot rifled slugs in a short, rifled slug barrel?
Any other essential or non-esoteric info on shooting shotgun slugs would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

Rifled slugs are made with rifling on the slug itself it gives the slug it's twist in a smooth barrel. A sabot slug is in a wade and has no rifling on it so you need a rifle barrel or a rifled choke to give the sabot slug it's twist.

You're going to find that a lot of rifle slug barrels are shorter than typical smoothbore barrels. This is due to the accuracy of the rifling in the barrel. A longer barrel (rifles) would only slow the slug down.
Sabot slugs are for the most part designed for rifled barrels. So their more accurate using a rifled barrel vs a smoothbore.
