40% off of $29.50
All percentages can be written as a decimal by computing the following:
(percent of discount ÷ 100) = percentage in decimals
There are three possible ways to do this. Which is easier? You decide :-)
WAY #1
Step 1: Turn the discount into a decimal.
40 ÷ 100 = 0.40
Step 2: Subtract the "0.40" from 1.00
1.00 - 0.40 = 0.60
Step 3: Multiply the total price of the item by "0.60" to get the total amount you will spend AFTER the discount.
29.50 • 0.60
$17.70 (<==ANSWER!!)
You will pay a total of $17.70
WAY #2
Step 1: Multiply the total price ($29.50) by the decimal value of the discount percentage (40% ==> 0.40)
29.50 • 0.40 = $11.80
Step 2: Subtract the total price ($29.50) from the answer you got in "Step 1" ($11.80) in order to get the total price to pay.
$29.50 - $11.80
$17.70 (<==ANSWER!!)
WAY #3:
Step 1: Figure out how much is 10% off of the total price.
$29.50 • 0.10
2.95
Step 2: Multiply the answer from "Step 1" with the "tens" digit of the discount.
40% ==> tens digit is "4"
2.95 • 4
11.80
Step 3: Subtract the total price ($29.50) from the answer you got in "Step 2" ($11.80) in order to get the total price to pay.
$29.50 - $11.80
$17.70 (<==ANSWER!!)
Hope I helped!

1 % of any amount is 1/100 of that amount........this is the key idea
So 40% is 40/100 ( which is 4/10) of 29.50
So 40% of 29 .50 = 4 x 29.50/10 = 11.80
Then 29.50 minus 11.80 = 17 .70 which is the amount you would have to pay

Without resorting to a calculator,get an instant idea of what the reduction is, using approximations:
First find out what one tenth is - you're talking about 30 (approx) - so, one tenth is 3
Then multiply that by 4 to get around 12 off!
You'd pay a little less than 18

its very simple for example lets use the number 300. 10 percent of 300 would be 30. basically just drop the last number of whatever number there is and keep the first two number another example lets use the number 45. 10 percent of 45 is 4.5 a two digit number rember to move the decimal point one place over to the right

multiply by .6
if you want to take 20% then multiply by .8
in general, just multiply by (1-Percent/100)
