What does someone mean when they say "You look like you need a hug"?

I was a volunteer at this event and the head of my group(way older than me, I'm a teen) one day after a photo session comes towards me and says you look like you need a hug and he hugs me too. What does this mean?. Does it mean he's pitying me, does it mean I look like someone to be pitied upon(like forever) or did I give that kind of facial expression only for that moment. Or does it mean I need some help.

i am not sure who started it(they say it's as an australian named juan mann) but in many movies they have used it as tool to alleviate a persons mood and very popular nowadays free hugs campaign

it might not just be for sympathy it just gives us a warm feeling(not just body heat) that we are not alone

in ur case maybe u were tensed and not having smile or new to the group and were less outgoing

u must have felt the difference after his hug

By "way older", do you mean old enough to have come of age around 1970? If so, he may be acting on some of the weird ideas that were floating around at the time, such as the notion that the world would be a better place if we forgot traditional etiquette, and treated everyone as if they were our best friends. Furthermore, we were supposed to ignore our inhibitions, including, especially, inhibitions against touching one another. Obviously, this program didn't work out, but some people still haven't given up, and think that everything can be solved with a hug.

For the most part, when people say this they mean you look sad or upset and believe giving you a hug will cheer you up.

I always look sad naturally, so if someone said this to me it wouldn't mean anything.

I assume that the person feels that physical contact is going to make you feel better. Being a little sceptical, I wonder how much older is this person and if they have less than honorable objectives.

Looking exotic is always a compliment as it means you have a different look than everyone else, but in a great way.

When I say it to a woman with a nice rack, it means I'm the one who needs the hug. If I say it to anyone else, it means they look depressed.

Sounds like a funny old dude trying to see how far he can get with you. A hand shake along with a friendly quote should be enough...not touchy and huggy.

It meas you look sad and he was trying to make your day, the only way to know if you need help is if you are always sad, take it as a complement
