Using a choke collar with small dogs?

I have used choke collars for my positive/negative training form for a while. I have a friend who has an aggressive chihuahua and I was wondering if you should deal with an aggressive small dog the same way you would with a larger dog; with the use of a choke collar. Or does it being smaller make a difference, even though they come in the size fit for a chihuahua and the strength for such a dog.

Back up your response with information.

Update:

forgive me for the repost. It is because i originally wasn't getting any responses and i didnt know if my terms were confusing people.

If you are using a choke chain PROPERLY , key word being PROPERLY with only slight pops to correct the dog and never any other form of choking, then yes, a choke chain can technicaly be used with a small breed, although I prefer slip collars as they actually pop better and there are no chains to become tangled.

HOWEVER, I don't recomend you even think about training an aggressive chi yourself, especially if you have to ask how to properly use the training tools. Find an experienced trainer, and take it from there. Choke chains can be very affective, but only if used properly and in the right circumstances. With such a small dog you run a large risk of seriously injuring or killing the dog if you use a choke chain improperly. Each dog is different. Not all dogs respond to choke chains and similiar techniques. I don't even like using choke chains on smaller dogs. I think all other methods should be used first, because the risk is very high for injury if you use the choke chain incorrectly.

    Choker Collars For Dogs

They say that choke collars on any size dog is NOT Good! It can damage their esophagus and the neck. It sounds like the dog needs obedience training rather than a choke collar - especially if it aggressive - no matter the size.

Some people will feed the dog when dinner is over and they think that's different, but the dog can't tell when it's dinner time and will bug you until you stop dinner and then feed him. So think about the chain of behavior that you're rewarding here. Learn here https://tr.im/rn8fI

Contrary to what you're being told here, feeding your dog "people food" is not what's making him beg. I'm a professional trainer and always feed my dog human quality training treats (cut up chicken, cheese, beef, turkey, etc.) and those of us trainers who do this never have a begging problem. Our dogs know that they get "paid" for correct behavior and never from the table. You could feed your dog dogfood from the table and have a begging problem. It isn't *what* you're feeding, but *when* and *where* you feed him that counts.

If you have a problem with begging, the odds are that you have other problems as well. Consider taking your dog to a basic training class to teach him to obey when you ask him to do something or stop doing something undesirable. Dogs that bark and pester you have learned bad habits-- from you! Going to a training class will help you unlearn those and help you get into better habits.

  • Chihuahua and a choker chain won't mix-Chihuahua neck are incrediable thin-and even a slight pressure from the choker chain can cause serious injury to a chihuahua neck, resulting in it actual physcially breaking its neck or requireing costly surgery to repair damage to the windpipe.

Small breeds i recommend a harness or Halt or gentle leader for control-there also now the Easy walk harness. Don't forget you can buy muzzles for the dogs too.

NO. I wouldn't put a choke collar on a small dog. I did that with my small dog when she was young and continued using it. Now shes older, and she has a throat problem due to that stupid collar they told me to use. Now shes constantly coughing and her neck is very sensitive. I feel so sorry for her and I hate myself for using that stupid torture tool.

How about I wrap a chain around your neck so you can hardly breathe, and then I'll deliberately yank it to choke you?

smaller and larger dogs are big difference. small dogs are a lot weaker than most big dogs a choke collar is when a dog lunges and its to correct him a choke chain should not be used on the small dog
