Do 9 deaths from salmonella justify government having total control over our food supply?

Associated Press -- updated 10:43 a.m. AKT, Fri., July 31, 2009

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a far-reaching food safety bill requiring more government inspections and imposing new penalties on those who violate the law, reacting strongly to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts that killed at least nine people.

"Americans are dying because the Food and Drug Administration doesn't have the authority to protect them," said Michigan Rep. John Dingell, the bill's sponsor."

We are trying to wrap our minds around why health care is so expensive and problematic while the corporatocracy pounds the last nail in the coffin to make natural food production financially nonviable.

The number of people dying from heart disease, stroke, cancer or diabetes is 155,677 times greater than the number of deaths being used to justify this Orwellian food legislation. This is not about safety. It's about profit.

Have you become frightened enough to surrender your right to produce your own food? Do you want to be entirely dependent on agribusiness biotechnology corporations and the government for your food?

Update:

Kyle A - Would it surprise you to know that the people who run the FDA and USDA are also high up in the agribusiness and biotech industries? Look into it.

Update 2:

People dying is always sad, but we cannot allow government to use these deaths to justify restricting our rights as citizens. If a few people dying justifies surrendering your right to grow any of your own food, then you are supporting totalitarianism.

Update 3:

scott b - If my fiancee died in a car accident, would it be logical to ban automobiles?

The FDA is a joke to me. Nothing but a rubber stamper to the highest paying chemical/food company and their junk science. With Obama recently appointing Micheal Taylor back to a position in the FDA I have never been more fearful going to the grocery store.

Edit: Many don't realize the FDA is working for corporations before the people judging by the answers here.

And no it does not justify giving more control to the government.

while nine deaths doesn't justify these extreme measures, and I agree that gov't must be watched as they appear to be in the midst of a huge power grab, there didn't seem to be anything that suggests that our right to produce our own food is in jeopardy.

Maybe I'm missing something or I'm unaware of some agenda that they've been working on. What exactly about the bill is troubling you? Are they planning to come into my yard and stomp on my tomatoes?

Remember how FEMA handled Kitrina. Well, the truth is, that FEMA can take 100% control of the country if they designate a disaster. Also, If the CDC does the same thing, they have unilateral rights to pretty much do anything. Move troops, marshal law etc...

Yea- ban automobiles, or control who gets to drive one. Control the food supply. Control the water supply. Control every d**** thing you can. That way you control the people, and they don't even know it.

Who else is going to protect us from harmful contaminents in our food supply? That is public health and national security which is the government jurisdiction and responsibility. private companies do not give a **** about us except making money. if it is more profitable to use harmful ingredients, they will.

Sorry, but I don't find a reduction in lethally contaminated foodstuffs to be anything but sensible.
