9 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWeight Loss in Alcoholic?
The husband of my best friend is an alcoholic. Lately he has lost weight and is starting to look older and rather unhealthy. He was always good-looking and well-built. Both his parents are diabetic, so we have been trying to get him to see a doctor for a check-up. Like all alcoholics, he is in denial, and although he is worried about his weight loss and apprearance, he blames other factors, and even his wife, for his weight loss. Is it likely that his problem is the result of his alcoholism? Maybr he doesn't have diabetes, but my friend is worried that his drinking is having disastrous effects on his health. What can be done to convince him to see and doctor and to get help for his drinking?

4 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoWhy Has America Regressed on the Matter of Torture?
Ronald Reagan, May 20, 1988, transmitting the Convention Against Torture to the Senate for ratification:
"The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention. . . . Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.
The core provisions of the Convention establish a regime for international cooperation in the criminal prosecution of torturers relying on so-called “universal jurisdiction.” Each State Party is required either to prosecute torturers who are found in its territory or to extradite them to other countries for prosecution. "
Convention Against Torture, signed and championed by Ronald Reagan, Article II/IV:
"No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat or war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture. . . Each State Party shall ensure that all acts of torture are offences under its criminal law."

Maybe that's the real reason he's hospitalized. He must have tons of flab on that ugly, overindulged body of his. If so, he'll probably be in there for awhile. They'll have to clean his system of Oxycontin first.

1 AnswerOther - Health1 decade agoAntiwar Goes to Congress?
Rep Alan Grayson, D-Florida read a petition to Congress from 100,000 people calling for an end to the war in Afghanistan. It seems that many Americans haven't stopped protesting the war, but have only changed tactics, taking their demands directly to Congress.
What do you think about this? I'm happy to know that Americans against this war haven't gone anywhere, and that they don't care whose war it is now, they want it ended. I'll be looking for a petition to sign, and I hope others join me.
1 AnswerPolitics1 decade agoReturn of the Antiwar Right?
I've been wondering how conservatives will handle Obama's support for what have been known as Bush's wars. In this article, written by conservative Jack Hunter, the possibility that the right is finally moving away from the willingness to go to war anywhere, anytime, and toward an anti-interventionist position regarding US foreign policy, is discussed. As the writer says, it's about time.
"For eight long years under George W. Bush, conservatives endorsed a don’t ask, don’t tell foreign policy–they did not really ask why their country was at war and Republican leaders did not tell, or bother, Americans with any of the gory details. Missions were accomplished, we fought them over there so we didn’t have to fight them here and troops were supported by simply supporting the wars they fought, with little to no dissent. But why were we fighting? What was “victory?” How many had to die? What was the cost? Conservatives did not ask-Republican politicians did not tell."
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoDemocrats: What Are Your Thoughts on Ralph Nader?
I am beyond disgusted over the unwillingness of Obama and Democratic Congress to reverse the destruction wrought on this country by the corporate lobby running America. Ralph Nader expresses my thoughts very well. It is time for government to represent Americans, not corporate capitalists at our expense. What are your thoughts, Democrats?

To American Right to Life Sarah Palin is pro-choice. “[H]er words and actions prove that she is officially pro-choice and stands against the God-given right to life of the unborn,” a new report by the group says.
The GOP is having problems with their beloved supporters on the far right. ARTL also accuses GW Bush, Mitt Romney, Antonin Scalia and Ron Paul of favoring the right to choose.
Good. It's time they paid for the divisions and hatred they've created in this country.

3 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWould You Vote for Ron Paul?
I don't agree with Paul on all the important issues, but I must say, his honesty and willingness to oppose his own party as well as Democrats is refreshing to say the least. I would seriously consider voting for him for that alone.
Of course, his independence assures that he will never run on the Republican ticket.
This link provides links to pieces Paul has written on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The links go back to 2006, and you can find them on the right side of the web page.
