Weight Loss in Alcoholic?

The husband of my best friend is an alcoholic. Lately he has lost weight and is starting to look older and rather unhealthy. He was always good-looking and well-built. Both his parents are diabetic, so we have been trying to get him to see a doctor for a check-up. Like all alcoholics, he is in denial, and although he is worried about his weight loss and apprearance, he blames other factors, and even his wife, for his weight loss. Is it likely that his problem is the result of his alcoholism? Maybr he doesn't have diabetes, but my friend is worried that his drinking is having disastrous effects on his health. What can be done to convince him to see and doctor and to get help for his drinking?

Nothing will convince him. He has to come to the decision himself.

Denial is one of the biggest obstacles to getting help for alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The desire to drink is so strong that the mind finds many ways to rationalize drinking, even when the consequences are obvious. Unfortunately, denial often increases as drinking gets worse.

You cannot force someone you love to stop abusing alcohol. As much as you may want to, and as hard as it is to watch, you cannot make someone stop drinking. The choice is up to them.

Problems--such as liver disease, heart disease, certain forms of cancer, and pancreatitis--often develop more gradually and may become evident only after long-term heavy drinking.

    You obviously know all this.

Could you get his doctor to call on him or ask him to make an appointment for a diabetes check in view of his family history?

Do his parents know what is happening?

Apart from that would your friend speak to a body like Alcoholics Anonymous to see what help there is for her?

I don't know if they help relatives, if not they will know who to contact.

I am sorry not to have a good answer, but the question touched me. A friend of mine had an alcoholic husband - total denial- he dropped dead one frosty night walking home along a country lane from his favourite pub. I reckon he had a merciful end, all the grief and guilt was left to his wife, son and daughter.

The very first step for known alcoholics to solve their problem is to ADMIT that they are indeed Alcoholics. Denial is always the one factor that gets in the way. No amount of words of encouragement could help the person if he himself cannot see the real problem. Referring him to Alcoholics Anonymous is helpful.

With regards to his health, it is very much possible that the husband of your friend is diabetic since both of his parents are identified as diabetics. This type of disease is hereditary. Still, it is better to submit him for a medical check up to see his blood sugar level if it is within the normal limits. Furthermore, additional tests can be done by his medical doctor to rule out other preexisting condition. Unexplained weight loss warrants close attention. Alcoholism coupled with diabetes can have a very deleterious effect on ones health. It is not yet too late to do something. Maybe you could convince his parents to take him to attend in one of their support group meetings just so he could get an overview picture of what the disease is all about.

Solving problems like these are one of the most difficult to handle. It always takes two to tango. It is important for your friends family to show their support, understanding, and unconditional love.

Hope that helps. Contact me anytime if there is anything else that you need.
