If you want to be a true black belt, it will take you anywhere from 10-15 years. Like everyone else said, "McDojos" will get you one much faster, but it's a scam. To truly master brazilian jiu jitsu, you will have to be a student for many many years.

    Which black belt?

To show off to your crush and friends, you can get one in about two years from local mcdojo where the coach took only one seminar of BJJ then claim to be BJJ expert and give out black belt.

To be just another face in the crowd of BJJ black belt at some grappling tournament, maybe 6 to 8 years at your average local BJJ school.

To be a actual BJJ black belt from one of the elite grapplers, maybe 8 to 14 years.

Yes it take VERY long time to get BJJ black belt from any legiment instructor. They're very strict about it. Some instructor are more strict than others. For example some of Gracie's blue belts would regularly tap out a purple or even brown belt from other BJJ school.

    does it matter?

i had the fixation with belts too but then i had a revelation that its just a colour on something i wear around my gi.

id rather have the skills to show then the belt to show.

overall i hear it takes a good 8-10+ years

this depends on passing every grade straight out & being experienced at it.

be lucky it takes that long it means you truly deserve it.

i used to do taekwondo (sport aspect) cmon belt testing every 3 months?

thats 4 belts a year (the higher grades probs take 6+ months for testing) its ridiculous.

in my arts jujitsu and silat i think its once a year we get tested.

i havent even bothered asking my instructors because it doesnt matter to me.

il be honest id like to be seen as more then just a white belt but hey i got to achieve that. overall i go to martial arts and enjoy it to learn rather then fixate on the belts.

From white? Many years unless you compete all the time and win all the time. You would have to be at least 18 to earn it, but I don't think anyone has earned theirs in two years from white. Even BJ Penn took 4 years to earn his.

lol yeah its going to take a long long time unless you are really good. Focus on just trying to learn as much as you can. That is what's important. Belts are just a way for schools to make money.

average time is about 7-10 years.

If you are BJ Penn, 4 years.

If you are a normal person 10 years minimum.
