The cough supressent works be constricting the air ways in your throat, depressing the lungs and numbs the throat so that the urge to cough is gone. Your blood pressure is lowered when taking these meds and the cold part is designed to dry out the sinuses and open them, it does this and dries out your joints in the process. All these chemicals are all broken down by the liver and put a great amount of stress on the liver that could pontentially cause liver failure.

In a short term of a few days they are not likely to cause you harm, but never take them for prolonged periods of time such as for a week without consulting a doctor first. The sleepiness is likely due to a antihistamine within the over-the-counter medicine you are taking. It's for a runny nose and there are lots of other similar meds for colds which treat cough and cold symptoms but which do not contain antihistamines. Ask a pharmacist for a recommendation and they are usually glad to help.

The cough and cold pills remind you of your Mom, when she used to nurse you, and they make you go to sleep to her silent, remembered, lullaby.

Unless you have some systemic health issues (e.g, lupus) go ahead and take them. Studies have shown they don't shorten the sickness, just numbe the pain.

btw, a nice dark rum in hot tea with brown sugar will do the same thing.
