Tackling "the Bathroom Issue" (its a trans thing)?

This is actually hilarious to me. I graduated this year, and suddenly my college has decided they are going to discuss the bathroom policy for students in transition (they currently have no policy).

Now, I'm an alumni of the college (w00t). So I'll be taking time to go and be present for the dialogue because there are still two transgirls there at the college (whom are my friends) and I want to support them and trans rights in general.

Here's what I'm hoping for. I'm not the first person to go up against a college for some basic rights, I'm sure. I would love it if everyone could share some stories or resources so I can prepare to wow the college and make sure they make the right choice when it comes to the right to bathrooms.

Pretty much, this is the only link I have to go on right now:

http://www.transgenderlawcenter.org/pdf/PIP%20Reso...

Anyone else got anything better? Canada/Ontario specific would mean the world to me too!

Thanks in advance, and to the haters.... *nah nah nah* You can't stop us, we'll pee where we please!

Update:

Thanks for the definition Bryant... and Ouran is awesome... but where did I say "transgender"?

Also, I'm a transman... so please, don't think I'm ignorant of the definition of terms.

I tackled this exact same issue going up against the board of regeants and the president of our university.

What we did, was we got a group of politically aware/activist type GLBT people to do the research we needed. We provided documentation of how trans people are the highest rates for hate crimes against them, and trans violence, which could happen if a trans person were in the wrong restroom for them.

We also provided documentation of a petition signed by other students on campus that agreed with our agenda to take to these people as proof that it was not just our group, but the student body as a whole that felt this way.

Our issue was not over just trans bathrooms though, but we wanted to add gender identity and expression to our campus anti-discrimination policy in general.

We presented all this documentation to our university president on her "open door policy" day where students could go in and speak to her directly about student concerns and suggestions. So we waited for that and then showed her all the documentation, and a group of about 40 of us went into her office to speak to her about how we felt about this issue.

We also presented the issue as legislation to be handled by our Associated Student Government (ASG). That legislation passed ASG, which was even MORE positive affirmation to present towards this issue.

Unfortunately though, the university president agreed with us, but the board of regeants did not. They felt that at a texas public institution, the matter would not be handled well, parents would get upset, and the university would lose funding...blah blah blah.

BUT..at least we were HEARD, and we feel that getting that education out there was at least the first step.

They did that at Manchester University, it was on the local news. They changes all the toilets to unisex, I thought it was a good idea. The girl who spearheaded the campaign seemed a bit self-righteous though.

I think a person should use the bathroom for the gender they represent themselves as, regardless of the actual 'plumbing'.

Ideally, no one should be seeing what's between your legs. But someone who looks like a female walking into the men's room (or especially viceversa) would be highly inappropriate and disruptive.

I just had to comment how sad it is that Bryant somehow felt it necessary to compare a real life struggle to something you find in an anime.

    Really how sad.

that would explain the abundance of single-stall unisex restrooms on our campus. And naive me thought it is due to older buildings. :)

    Great question.

I really wanted to offer you some encouragement.

    Sorry...

I hope this goes well for you, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

You realize that transgender means that you only appear as the opposite sex. Not necessarily meaning you have their organ. In anime "Ouran High School Host Club", the father is a transvestite. He only dresses like a woman, but has a male organ. Why else would he have a daughter? Men can't ovulate.

So, what's your goal? Are you trying to make it so that a man dressed as a woman can still use the men's room? Sure, why not?!

I guess I'm just missing your question.
