Actually it was Carolus Linnaeus. a christian, that first stated humans ARE apes over a century before Darwin came up with the Origin of species.
The science named for him is linnaean taxonomy and is still used to this very day.

Yes, since that time we have made many medical and agricultural advances based on the discovery that we share a common ancestor with other primates.

In general? I mean what aspect of life? It has probably made things harder for creationists, but overall I believe that it is a total gain, me being an evolutionist myself. It has increased our knowledge of the world and given us a correct view of where our species came from.
