Is there a food called pergoies?
I had a dish that I think was called pergoies (or maybe pergories). It is NOT a mispronunciation or misspelling of pirogi, which is a pastry shell stuffed with things.
The pergoies were small fried things, the size of a golf ball, orange-ish on the inside (maybe mashed potatoes seasoned with curry or tumeric?) with a very strong flavor of cumin and smoked paprika. The chef said they had onions in them, but because of his accent I couldn't really understand what it was he said they were called.
When I try to Google it, I always end up with, "Did you mean to Google perogie?", which I did not.
If anyone has a recipe for these, or knows the ethnic or regional origin of these things, please answer. I've never had anything like this in the U.S. before.
Please read carefully...it's NOT perogies or pirogies or pierogis, and it's NOT a dough or pasta shell filled with anything.
It's pergoies (per-go-ees), and it's some kind of vegetable mashed up and mixed with onions and spices, then fried like a fritter.
I've had pirogies (or however the hell you spell it!) and this is not a pirogie.

From your description, it sounds like an indian dumpling that I have tried. Its called Samosa. I'm not Indian but I loved these things. My friend's wife made them for a tailgate party. Try this website & see if it looks like the one you are thinking of.

What you had was a samosa, not a pirogi/perogie.
Samosas are made with mashed up chickpeas, maybe other vegetables and spices, then deep fried by dropping a spoonful of mixture into the oil. There are different varieties, as most families have their own recipe.
Pirogi/perogie is a Polish dumpling, usually stuffed with a mixture of mashed potatoes, cheese and onions. They can be boiled, pan fried or deep fried.

What type of restaurant was it? If Indian, then they sound like samosas. The chef may have written pergoies on the menu because Americans are familiar with pirogies and he may have just spelled it wrong.

Pergoies are a Polish Dish. Dough stuffed with what you like Saurkraut or Potatos cheese etc. Sold in freezer section at the market.Usually cooked by boiling them till they come to top of pot, then fry them in butter and cooked onions.Good with sour cream on top. Hum.

Nancy is right, the first time I tried these was in Winnipeg,Canada, my fiance is from there, they were wonderful, they had mashed potato's with cheese in hem, served with fried onions and bacon served on top with a dab of sour cream, totally wonderful, you have got to try them sometime, all of our grocery stores sell them here in Grand Forks,North Dakota.

yup. I pass by them all the time whenever I go to Wal-Mart. They look pretty damn good but I can't get them because my mom doesn't believe in frozen food -______-x
They are filled with potato or something like that, kind of like European dumplings I suppose. I hoped this helped(:
