I won't repeat the advice already given by others -- very interesting answers. What I will do is add to it. There are many times that we have ideas float through our conscious mind when we are doing something not related to art-making. I often am walking somewhere and I see something that prompts a creative response. The important thing is to record it as soon as possible. As a result I have 50 or more notebooks with all manner of drawings and writings, any of which could become the genesis of a work of art. The challenge then becomes "Which of these ideas will I develop?" There is never a shortage from which to select.
The appropriation of objects, images and ideas is hardly a crime. Many artists use this process at the very beginning -- the key is to transform the borrowed thing creatively, in other words making it your own. This can be a literal borrowing such as was done by the Dadaists (collages) or by the great master Robert Rauschenberg, whose work is almost always visually striking.
Notebooks: consider keeping them and also binders with clear acetate sleeves to hold on to printed materials.

Meditation...works well for me...as well as music....I observe other artists looking for inspiration...may even watch them as they create something.
Read a good book on how to become a better artist and learn to learn..how to think...a way to get in that mindset or creation.and creativity....
