What is this type of running injury, and how do we treat it?

My wife has taken up running with one of her 'experienced-runner' friends. Unfortunately, this friend has pushed my wife too far too fast.

Anyway, my wife now has this pain in her right knee. The pain is the soft area right under the knee cap. She cannot walk very well with it, let alone run.

She's been putting ice on it at night, along with Icy Hot.

Any ideas what this injury is, how to treat it, and how long such an injury usually lasts? My wife is very frustrated with it. She's on a mission to lose her baby weight, but has not eased into running. She and her friend are doing these crazy Flo-Jo speed runs, followed by lunges, etc.

    i had that problem too. i forget the technical term for it but a common nickname for it is runners knee. i went to physical therapy. and it really isn't a problem for me anymore.

    i cannot be completely sure that its runners knee though. i can only assume based on your description. i would suggest going to a sports doctor so you can be exactly sure.

    There is connective tissue at the upper and lower end of the knee cap. Hopefully, that tissue isn't damaged too badly. Too fast too soon is a bad combination, and I think its the pounding that's the problem. Your wife's body is not used to the pounding and the stress of such training. Injuries like this take a while to heal, which really sucks for her. I would definitely talk to a sports medicine specialist, and possibly undergo some physical therapy sessions if you can afford it. If not, rest it for at least 6 weeks, and start up slowly next time. Good luck.
