My HP laptop quit working. Anyone have advice for me?
I have an HP DV1040. I got it quite a while ago, in 2004. I was watching a movie on it one night and it made a loud pop and shut off. It won't turn back on now. Any suggestions on what happened? At the time, it was an expensive computer and I really like it, so I think
Believe it or not, this computer was over $1,200. I hate that it probably costs about 20% of what I got it for 5 years ago now, but I like the long battery life and amount of memory. Any idea on how much a shop will charge to look at, diagnose, and fix a power problem?

It sounds like you power supply popped.
It might be worth getting it repaired - although a PC that cost 1,200.00 in 2004
would cost about 400.00 today... maybe less.

Like $80 if there's no need to replace the motherboard or the processor, which are the most expensive and, taking in account the age of the hardware, sometimes it's cheaper in terms of money and time to just backup the data to the hard drive of a brand new computer.
