Why did God put the playground next to the sanitation department?

Seriously, though, what theories are there regarding the evolutionary advantage of having the reproductive organs so close in proximity to/integrated with the waste elimination mechanism in vertebrates? I was pondering this myself recently and other than the abdominal muscles and other muscles in that area being handy in forcing out what needs to be forced out in those departments, I couldn't really come up with a good reason...

Evolution is a series of random, gradual changes. Early animals, like worms, developed the simplest structure: a mouth at one end and sanitary facilities at the other. This basic structure was simply elaborated on in more complex animals. So long as the reproductive function worked where it was, there was no evolutionary pressure to move it elsewhere.

Consider yourself lucky to have at least some separation of facilities. Many animals have a cloaca (Latin for sewer), that combines all the functions.

You've answered it yourself in your question.

Also, they're out of the way in at the lower end of the body.

As a female, I know how irritating it is to accidentally knock my breasts on things. Ouch.

Imagine a man's testes were on his chest. Half the population would be cringing in pain most of the time; the chest is very exposed.

You can sit and debate evolution all night; but fact of the matter is, we can make theories all we want, but we just don't know for absolutely certain now, do we?

    God is retarded.

But I do like the first answer as an alternative hypothesis.

Maybe you should just let it go. Some things might be wiser to accept since they're difficult to comprehend.

    I'm just saying. (smiling)
