Why won't my laptop read this disc?

My friend let me borrow a disc to install a program on my computer. However, my laptop begins to read it and then stops. I even put in a CD to be sure my disc drive isn't broken, and it ran the CD just fine.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Update:

It's a disc to install programs for colouring and editing pictures, like Photoshop and Corel Painter.

Also, the disc is in pristine condition.

Well, you know that I'm not good with technology, but I'm thinking that maybe the computer is reading the disc as a threat and aborting the action before it continues. That's the only thing I can think of that would explain why it begins to read it and stops. Either that or the disc isn't formatted for the version of computer you have.

Check the disc and make sure there aren't any big scratches or cracks or fingerprints goobers on it.

Is it a game? Or program, program -- it could be that the files it is trying to run are not compatible with your operating system...
