New York City, What to see? Where to stay?
My wife and I want to go to New York City for 2 or three days. 1. What should we see? eg Ellis Island. 2. Where can we find reasonable lodging? Do we stay outside of the city? Appreciate your suggestions.

Museum of Natural History
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Guggenheim Museum
Museum of Modern Art
Museum of the City of New York
Take the subway into Brooklyn and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan
Empire State Building
The fast boat (I'm so sorry I totally forget what it's called but it is a boat tour in the Hudson River that goes fast and its fun)
South Street Seaport
You don't have to do all of those things but you should look these up (the ones you can) and see if you want to do them.
I recommend from this list that you do the Brooklyn Bridge and South Street Seaport (they are right next to each other) and are good (like if you do one you should do the other)
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis island in my opinion is a waste of time because you have to wait a long time to get there for something not that special.
I don't know about hotels though cuz I live there lol!
Have fun!

Hotel construction has exploded all over New York City, so you can probably get something nice in Long Island City or Downtown Brooklyn and commute right in if nothing inexpensive is available.
The Natural History Museum and the Metropolitan Museum have suggested donations but you can pay less. If you go to the Natural History Museum, use the side entrance because it is less crowded.
If you need show tickets, visit Duffy Square in Times Square, or pick them up in South Street seaport when you are visiting Downtown. Bring cash they are half-price in those places.
Be sure to visit the Wall Street area. Don't miss Federal Hall, the first capital of the United States. See the stock exchange and the corner filled with shrapnel from an anarchist's attempt on Morgan Bank. See Fulton Fishmarket, where Al Smith, governor of New York and the first Catholic Presidential candidate recieved his "FFM" degree.
Feel free to look at my New-York Centric articles for more information about free or cheap attractions and the history of New York.
