Why do most Ivy League schools and top tier colleges have a lot of Asian people?
I never got that. I was recently looking at collegeboard.com for fun and I decided to see the Demographics for some colleges.
AT UCLA and UC Berkeley, Asians are the majority (they outnumber the Whites). At colleges like Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Brown, and Yale, Asians make up well over 10 percent and are twice as much in number when compared to Blacks and Latinos.
Why is this the case?
Don't tell me that Ivy League schools only accept nerds because they turn down many students with 4.0 GPAs and 2400s SATs but still Asians make up a large percentage.
Oh and btw, Indians = Asian according to statistics
* 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native
* 19% Asian/Pacific Islander
* 8% Black/Non-Hispanic
* 7% Hispanic
* 41% White/Non-Hispanic
* 10% Non-Resident Alien
* 15% Race/ethnicity unreported

It could be legacy as well since so many Asians get into those types of schools, you know? So why not their brothers and sisters. But you are right. I saw that, too. I've been fantasizing about Columbia University for some years now.
And I looked at the same documentation you are talking about. I don't know why there are so many. But they must have credentials AND contacts, too, because so many of them go there.
Edit- Wow, no I'm still an undergrad but I wanted to go as a visiting student, just for a year (Columbia College). I know this sounds stupid, but it's been one of my dreams and I just want to have the experience of matriculating there.
I've been to the campus and fell in love with it. It felt like home. I knew at that point that I had to go there. Since you were accepted, would you be kind enough to perhaps...give me a few pointers?
If it's not too much to ask. Any advice/suggestions would be welcomed and taken under advisement.

I agree with you and Joan of Arc (Rory). As an Asian girl, I have an insight on how Asians think. In Asian culture, a vigorous education is enforced upon the younger generation. In other words, Asian students put a lot of emphasize on becoming elites. If you look at the statistic, you'll find that Asians are the most educated group in America and also have the highest paying occupations, even among White People, who make up the majority high class. This is actually why we're considered the "Model Minority". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_minority
Futhermore, most Asian students are VERY ambitious and will do anything to have a bright future. But in most cases, the pressure to excel comes from their parents. Asian parents are very strict about their children's academic performance. To an Asian, getting a 'B' considered "Bad". So really, it's that typical Asian mentality. That's why a lot of Asians are straight 'A' students and are able to qualify for Ivy Leagues.

Asians place a much higher value on education (at least 1st and 2nd gen do) In America. In most Asian countries you have to take exams just to go to a good middle school and high school. And on top of that the curriculum isn't dumbed down. So when they come here the work is usually so much easier and they fly by. it's the same with Indian people being the majority at most of the engineering schools I looked at.
Basically,they come here,get a degree here and come back to their home country it's like their raping the American schooling system to benefit their country..

these are only skewed statistics due to the limited number of students that can enroll in ivy league schools, which is around 20,000 students a year. i am currently here in MIT and most faces i see around me are white and jewish. there are many asians as well but they are also the ones with the highest drop out rate in our classes. as is the case with hispanic and black students. staying here counts much more than just being approved and dropping the course in a short period of time.

From my understanding the UC schools (UCLA, UC Berkeley etc.) do not take affirmative action into consideration so that is why their are low numbers of African Americans and Latinos. I'm not too sure about the Ivies.

They choose who they think is going to make their school look the best academically....just like how they pick certain types of people for their football teams and basketball teams....the pick those who will make them look the best.
