I definitely think the days of the Guitar God are long gone. This isn't saying we won't see future virtuosos coming and going...but not in the sense of pioneer axemen like Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, Blackmore, etc. Slash never even comes close to entering my mind as a "Guitar God". In my humble opinion, he was just another mediocre run of the mill player, not really offering a whole lot that hadn't been done before by his many predecessors. So I guess I'd have to disagree.

*Edit - On a closing note...Slash was in the right place at the right time, and had a few of the basic chops down fairly well. What really made him famous was the songs he recorded with G&R. Without songs like November Rain, Estranged, Sweet Child of Mine, etc...nobody would have taken notice, as he certainly wouldn't have gained any sort of notoriety on his own...or in a lesser known band. The fact that he could play fairly well definitely worked to his advantage by putting him into the spotlight, via MTV etc. Other than that...he really hasn't contributed anything to rock music on the scale of a true "Guitar God".

I disagree with that,Slash is not the last of the guitar gods. There are way to many guitarist in the world other than Slash that could be the last guitar God,and i don't think anyone will ever know who the last guitar God will be.Yes,Slash is a great guitarist but just not a guitar God yet.

Disagree. Why? That's simple...he's just not as good as people make him out to be. Plus, country guitar virtuoso Brad Paisley released his first album in 1999--after Slash was introduced to the music world--and, in all honesty, Brad Paisley could not only outplay Slash in country music, but also in blues, jazz, surf rock, jazz and even rock. No offense to Slash though. I mean, he's good but he is very overrated. Most artists who are that famous are!

Smiley: I think I'd have to agree with you about the days of "Guitar Gods" being gone. I mean, all the true guitar virtuosos, such as Brad Paisley himself, seem to be overlooked as the guitarists they are by a lot of guitarists and even their own fans! Plus, it seems to me that most people wouldn't consider a country guitarist a "Guitar God" no matter how good they are, which is a bit sad. Vince Gill actually makes a good point on the Crossroads 2007 DVD about how you can name so many great rock guitarists but, in country, most people can't even name 10 (even though country has had Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, Steve Wariner, John Jorgenson, Jerry Reed, Brad Paisley, James Burton and Vince Gill himself). Anyway, I agree that the time of "Guitar Gods" is gone.

    Disagree.

The prosecution presents the evidence: John Frusciante, Dimebag Darell and Zakk Wylde.

I completely disagree, though I respect Slash to an extent i really do find him overrated. Sometimes his solo's are screechy or just don't do it for me... Honestly, there are a lot of amazing guitarist's out there and just because they aren't recognized (sadly) doesn't mean they aren't as capable and good as Slash. Actually, my pseudo-friend's brother is a guitarist in a band and boy oh boy, he's like Zappa, Morello and Clapton all in one. Now that's a guitar god (that has yet to be worshiped).

i dont know if hes the last of the guitar gods....i am hoping that a new band will come along and revive rock music the way gnr did, there hasnt been anyone lately who is worthy of that title, its not whether u can play guitar, its whether u know who it is 2 seconds into the song and slashs personal style made him a legend

Now are you asking me to agree to disagree or disagree to agree?

I do believe he is a great guitar player, but the last of the gods I don't know me I can agree to disagree with that.

    take care

    dave

  • disagree...

    my "why's"...

    buckethead

    and

    zakk wylde

along with american guitarist's pick...paisley does some really clever and remarkable things with his playing...

of course, i am a complete sucker for even a mediocre guitarist...but that proves my position...as long as there are folks like me to elevate players to mercurial status, there will continue to be "guitar gods".

now playing: from me to you - the beatles

    Jerry Cantrell

Edit: I have no idea why I did that. It so happened that I was listening to AiC at MTV Unplugged right now. There's still definately still more guitar gods, but they're still unheard of or less apreciated.
